Project farm rated this their top ice maker. The only downside was the price.
Edit: I was wrong they rated their bullet ice machine ($90) as their top one, the nugget machine that won was from GE

I bought this from Costco at about 150. Really happy, does get a little louder then id like. Recommendeds biweekly cleaning and I use distilled water to try to stretch the life. Probably had about a year.

The GE just doesn't last—I'm already on my third one. The first died, the second lasted only 11 months before I got a warranty replacement, and I was told the warranty on the replacement only covers whatever was left from the original purchase. Now the newer one is already making noises, so I'm just waiting to replace it with something better.

Same experience. It's probably been 4 years or so but on my third one. I only buy them from Costco and just return and replace when they break. I don't generally abuse Costco's return policy...hell I rarely return anything there, but a $500 ice maker that gets cleaned with bleach and vinegar every week and only gets Brita water run through it should last more than 12-18 months. It's a bit of a high maintenance solution, but it does work.

That's actually not a bad idea; might just hold out for it to go on sale at Costco again so I have the luxury of swapping out there when/if it breaks.

I use 5% vinegar heated to over 150⁰f and run the clean cycle for duration of the cleaning cycle which is usually 15 minutes.
Vinegar heated over 120⁰f and a contact time of 1 minute has the same effect as disinfecting with diluted bleach at room temp. Both time and temp are needed to get rid of e.coli, salmonella, listeria monocytogenes.

I'm trying to find the study that shows time, temp and dilution numbers for a 5 log removal but I can't find it at the moment.

The hot vinegar also helps break down and gunk from calcium inside.

I believe it's very low. I don't remember exactly but I want to say 1 kWh every 5 to 7 hours. At least my version did. And I have an older fridigaire version I bought from Costco. I'll check later today as I need to clean it up and use it again now that I'm down to the last bits of bagged ice for a recent party.

It looks like 192 Watts when in active use (from an answer on the Home Depot page). It's difficult to estimate from that but at the high end that's maybe 4 kWh per day. Now, that's actively running it 24 hours per day, which isn't feasible unless you never sleep and are using all the ice all the time, but that would work out to about $20 per month at $0.15 per kWh. The reality is maybe no more than about $4 per month for electricity costs.

Have been using it for the last 1.5 years. Loved the ice maker. Great quality and quantity. Just be aware the noise is loud and be sure to clean it periodically.

Adding my recommendation to strictly use distilled water with these. I have had the GE Opal models or about 8 years. I get the extended warranty every time, because they do breakdown. Most recently I have bought them from Best Buy with the extended warranty. When it breaks, I go into the store, drop it off and get a new one. It's worth it because they don't last more than 18-24 months without problems.

That said, the distilled water makes a huge difference. Get a distiller on Amazon and you'll be glad you did.
