I just bought two codes to extend my ultimate sub. One and then another. Each for $37.96 a piece. Put in zip code 19703 for Delaware..tax free and used paypal for payment. Easy peasy. I also got $4.95 back for each code That I bought from seller: VenomDigital. Thanks! - My sub now ends January 7, 2028.
My GPU sub was expiring in early 2028 and I was planning to leave it that way, but decided to grab 1 code to extend it 3 more months. Considering how poorly Xbox has been doing the past several years, I'm not planning to get their next "console" / Project Helix. It's only a matter of time before they get out of the console hardware business. Next gen I'll probably will get a PS6 and then Game Pass won't be as useful. I may downgrade to PC Game Pass when my GPU expires, but we'll see.
Yup, just buy em if you like em. Most of the user base has or is figuring out the unit economics don't work in your favor for these subs over time.
The math is very individual.
I'm still burning through $9/mo time right now, but my last re-up was for ~$13/mo a couple months ago.
I played Forza Horizon 6 from mid-May to late-June. I've jumped back in a few times, but I'm essentially done with it. It was $70 and hasn't had any discounts I've seen, so at $13/mo, that offset 5.4 months of GPU, which makes it +3.9 months for cost comparison.
I'm currently playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (late-June to now) and will probably be playing it for another 2-3 weeks. Lowest price I've seen for Xbox digital is $35, which offsets 2.7 months of GPU. If my remaining play time estimate is correct, it would be +1.2 months for cost comparison.
I played Power Wash Simulator 2 late last year and early this year. Lowest sale price I've seen has been $20, which offsets 1.5 months of GPU. I mostly played it between other games, so it's difficult to assign time, but it feels like it was about even (thought I did get to play it at launch instead of waiting for a sale).
I purchased Blacktail (non-GP) for $6 and played it for about 7 weeks (1.9 months) this year, which makes it net -1.4 months for cost comparison.
The line between "I'm going to buy this at launch" and "I'll wait for a sale" varies widely between gamers, so cost offsets are also going to vary widely. I probably would have bought FH6, Avowed, Starfield, The Outer Worlds 2, and other big titles at launch anyway, and that obviously pushes the math toward GPU for my situation.
My preferred setup is to pay for GPU out of pocket using deals like this, then get all my non-GP games for "free" by using Microsoft Rewards. I've been all-digital since 2017, haven't paid actual money for an individual game since 2019, currently have ~$435 of points to redeem, and am earning $20-23/mo on average.
If someone is paying full price for GP, only plays a handful of games a year, is happy being a hardcore patient gamer, or mostly plays inexpensive indies, I agree they will probably be best served simply purchasing the games instead of subscribing to GP.
The vpn method no longer works and the conversion rate is terrible. It used to 1:1 for $1. I long for the old days.
back before M$ went super greedy turd mode...
as if charging people to play the games online they already bought isn't bad enough. unlimited is what it is, you want premium features, sure pay for em. i'll still never understand how the console community just rolled over and started paying subscription fees to play with friends, it's wild, while PC is still 100% free. you buy a game, you can actually play your game.
anyone remember back when PSN was free to play with your friends and you just paid if you want premium crap..?

Microsoft has always been a greedy company like all huge corporations. The only difference now is that Xbox isn't getting a blank check to spend money. They spent a ton to buy Activision Blizzard and need more money to pour into AI datacenters. So yeah... RIP Xbox.
I got 6 months for $77 with this. Codes were available immediately and redeemed with no issue. Basically half price so thanks. I also split game share with a friend so it's in half again.
I just can't figure out the Cashback. I have $7 and it's not showing. I wonder if it's just store credit
As someone else said, it is essentially store credit, but with some strings. You have to create an account under the email address you used for the original code delivery. In your account under Orders, open that order from your history. Near the bottom, there should be a section for Cashback. This took a few minutes to populate for me. Once you redeem the Xbox Live codes, there will be a link next to the cash back amount that says Claim. This adds it to your Eneba cash back wallet.
Once you have your Cashback balance, keep in mind that you can only use 30% of your cash back balance to cover a purchase. For example, according to what I just saw on their website, if you are buying something that's $10, and you have $10 in your wallet, Eneba would only allow you to use $3 of your cash back balance towards the new purchase. The rest has to be covered by another payment method. It's kinda frustrating, but it's better than nothing.

I mean you're not required to subscribe to it car purchase it if you don't want to and you can always just look for the games you want to play separately as separate CD keys or when they're on sale.... 😂
the issue for me is really just needing the subscription to play multiplayer games that I may pay a few times a month...

Yeah it's not for everyone because you own nothing. It's for people who just want access to a bunch of games and play whatever they want when they can. Owning if there's such a thing nowadays can mean you pay less especially for used or discounted when it's on sale but can play anytime until they remove it the digital license unless you have a disc copy that actually installs it to play and it doesn't need online servers...
Worked for me just now. $116.02 for 3x 3-months (9 months total), then used cash back for a fourth for a total of 12 months, for $27.33 more (not sure why cash back goes from $12 to $10.92, but whatever).
FYI, no sales tax if you use a CA zip code, and you get the chance to get class action money when someone inevitably sues these guys for violating CA's Hidden Fee Statute SB 478.

No it wasn't obvious, which is why I asked. Saying "9 months at $35" suggests you paid $35 / 9 months = $3.89/month.
There was plenty of context in my original answer to assume I was buying at $35 per 3 months, my guy. The fact I started the comment by saying I got close but not 1:1 should have been the most immediate giveaway. How would 9 months at $35 make any sense as getting close, especially when I'm making a complaint that I couldn't replicate the deal? Why would I complain if I found myself an even better deal at a third of the price?
It's ridiculous to have even asked and even moreso that I have had to explain.
