The Witness is a tough, exploration driven puzzle game that rewards patience with clever, simple rules and a huge number of challenges. The open pace and lack of hand holding make discovery satisfying, and the game can stay engaging all the way through for players who like that style. The main caveats are its steep difficulty, sparse story, and a final timed challenge that can be stressful or easy to miss. Motion sickness also came up for some players, so it is a strong fit for dedicated puzzle fans.

  • Puzzle fans who enjoy self-directed exploration, because the game rewards patient discovery with tough challenges and little hand-holding.

  • Players who like a long, demanding puzzle climb, because the difficulty can stretch across a huge number of puzzles and a multi-year finish.

  • Gamers who stay engaged through abstract progression, because the game keeps interest without fast movement or much story.

  • Completionists willing to hunt optional secrets, because 100% progress can require guessing at a hidden puzzle and chasing extra areas.

  • Players prone to motion sickness, because the game can cause nausea or leave them feeling off even without fast movement.

  • Story-driven players who want a payoff, because the ending can feel flat and the game offers little narrative resolution.

  • People who want steady guidance, because the game gives little explanation and can grind to a halt when progress depends on figuring things out alone.

  • Players who dislike stressful timed sections, because the final timed challenge can be stressful even though it is optional.

Did you say timed? I love puzzles but absolutely hate timers.
There's only one timed challenge at the end but it's not essentially to finishing the game. It is quite stressful, but avoidable.

other than that, I absolutely love this game.

Yeah the timed challenge was my white whale. It took me 4 years of off and one playing to finally get it.

Amazing game. Contender for best puzzle game ever.

This and Patrick's Parabox are my two favorites.

This was a multi year journey for me. A real challenge and def struggled. It can feel very rewarding and very frustrating. As others have said, it will not be for everyone but I think its Def worth the cost to check if out and see if you are one of the people who will enjoy it.

Even if you hate The Witness, go play The Looker (free on Steam), hilarious short game about how erudite The Witness thinks it is
This sounds hilarious. Do you need to have played The Witness for it to make any sense?

oh weird, could be the motion blur or something. there are programs (or some monitors with it built in) where it adds a center dot to your screen, which really helps with motion sickness. you could always try that if you go back to it
To add to this, sometimes the Field of View can really mess with people too. Some games have an intentionally tight FoV like 60-70 degrees for immersion but a lot of games do let you crank it up. It can distort the edges of the screen but at least it might help reduce motion sickness

I've been meaning to truly finish this game even though I already reached one of the lesser endings. There are more areas I know exist that I can't gain entry to and I can't bring myself to cheat for some reason.

This game is a very divisive puzzle game. You either absolutely love it or you don't. I loved it and completed all 600+ puzzles. The final challenge took me off and on 4 years to complete.
That's incredible!
