This game is a very divisive puzzle game. You either absolutely love it or you don't. I loved it and completed all 600+ puzzles. The final challenge took me off and on 4 years to complete.
The Witness is a tough, exploration driven puzzle game that rewards patience with clever, simple rules and a huge number of challenges. The open pace and lack of hand holding make discovery satisfying, and the game can stay engaging all the way through for players who like that style. The main caveats are its steep difficulty, sparse story, and a final timed challenge that can be stressful or easy to miss. Motion sickness also came up for some players, so it is a strong fit for dedicated puzzle fans.
Puzzle fans who enjoy self-directed exploration, because the game rewards patient discovery with tough challenges and little hand-holding.
The Witness is a difficult, simple puzzle game with very little explanation, steep progression, and almost no story. It suits players who like figuring things out on their own and can get stuck for long stretches, especially in later areas like the treehouse section.
It can cause nausea or feeling off for some players even though it has no fast movement. A center-dot overlay or motion-blur-related settings may help reduce the discomfort.
The game has little story and no strong payoff at the end for some players. The puzzles and exploration carry it, but the ending can feel underwhelming if you expect a big twist or reveal.
At $1.59, it is widely seen as a strong value for anyone who likes tough puzzle games. Even with frustration and a steep difficulty curve, the low price makes it an easy try for puzzle fans.
The final timed challenge is stressful, but it is not required to complete the game. It is the only timed challenge mentioned and can be skipped if you want to avoid it.
This was a multi year journey for me. A real challenge and def struggled. It can feel very rewarding and very frustrating. As others have said, it will not be for everyone but I think its Def worth the cost to check if out and see if you are one of the people who will enjoy it.
oh weird, could be the motion blur or something. there are programs (or some monitors with it built in) where it adds a center dot to your screen, which really helps with motion sickness. you could always try that if you go back to it
To add to this, sometimes the Field of View can really mess with people too. Some games have an intentionally tight FoV like 60-70 degrees for immersion but a lot of games do let you crank it up. It can distort the edges of the screen but at least it might help reduce motion sickness
I've been meaning to truly finish this game even though I already reached one of the lesser endings. There are more areas I know exist that I can't gain entry to and I can't bring myself to cheat for some reason.
