Teenage Engineering gear is at one of its better new-price points here, with 30 percent off landing close to the lowest seen on most models and matching similar Amazon coupons. The K.O. II stands out as a strong value in the lineup, and the PO 33 K.O. is the most versatile Pocket Operator thanks to its sampling mic and line input. The OP 1 is described as especially intuitive, while the whole range can feel like learning a new instrument and the promo appears limited to new items only. Out of state orders may also avoid sales tax, making the deal a bit sweeter.

Sweet!

I have a PO33 I never use along with a Launchkey 25 and Microfreak. 🤣 Looking to add another device to my drawer.

Jokes aside, anything good for beginners?
K.O. 2 is pretty great, seems like it's their most popular device at the moment, because of price/capabilities. Not without flaws (including manufacturing), but cool nevertheless.

I was really looking at them (EP-40 Riddim in particular) until the MPC Sample came out.. Ended up buying that instead.

I imagine the 64MB would be good enough for beginners? Any reason to get the 128MB? I love the layout and the calculator look. It looks more like my type of groovebox.

If you can only buy one Teenage Engineering Pocket Operator, I would recommend the PO-33 K.O.! without hesitation. Its a steal at $69.

The PO-33 has earned its reputation because it's the most versatile model in the lineup. Unlike most of the other Pocket Operators, which focus on a specific type of sound (drums, bass, chiptune, vocals, etc.), the PO-33 lets you sample virtually any sound using its built-in microphone or line input and turn those recordings into beats, melodies, or complete songs. It's widely regarded as the best first Pocket Operator by reviewers and the community.

Agreed. And get a good case for it, preferably one that doesn't require breaking off the hanger portion of the PCB. I also like the PO-32 Tonic. Not too big a fan of the third one in the Metal series, the PO-35 Speak. I have one and never use it.

I stopped buying T.E. stuff when they copyright-struck Bad Gear's review of the Medieval. They have since reversed it, but that they did it at all has soured me on their gear, same as Sony and their incessant copyright strikes of gaming channels.

I think it's just more storage for bigger/more samples, but I'd watch reviews to decide which one is better for you.

I want to love this, but it is basically learning a new instrument. If you have experience, probably a great deal. However, if you are new to this, be prepared to spend a lot of time learning

How is this for an older kid who is proficient in guitar and bass, can play piano and learning drums. Learning to read music but knows guitar tabs.

Anything here for him?

The KO2 (Riddim and Medieval also I assume) are also multi channel MIDI sequencers. Assign a pad a channel matching some other connected gear, turn on chromatic mode on that pad. Record either live or by step.

I would say nope. I'm 50 and played piano, flute, drums, tuba.I've continued on with guitar and singing. I'm also quite a computer nerd. These gadgets are where music and computer technology intersect.. And lemme tell you.. it's a hell of a learning curve for me.. Suggestion:Have the young man download something easier to mess with like Fruity Loops or even Garage Band (free on iPhones, iPads, Mac's...If he digs those, he can gravitate toward these gadgets.Your pocketbook will thank you later.

It's pricey gear, but OP-1 especially is very intuitive, and I was able to learn and figure it out very quickly. If your kid is passionate about music he will learn it in no time, and will absolutely thank you for this.
