I strongly discourage using melatonin, other than short term low dose exceptions, such as getting over jet lag, etc. High dosages over long periods of time is a bad idea.
As TealCalendar1895 wrote already, taking melatonin does not suppress the body's own melatonin production.
The People who poo-poo melatonin use are mostly people trying to sell you something else that costs you more or makes them more money than they could make selling melatonin, or people who believed what they heard from those people.
Melatonin is safe. Daily use- no problem.

I agree with not taking endogenously made hormones. Unless while out of balance ( like jetlag ), our body will try to balance the amount of any hormones hence when you provide your body with any amount of hormones from outside then it will reduce its own production.
