The US is one of the few countries that treat it so casually and where it (melatonin) isn't treated as a prescription medicine rather than an over-the-counter supplement. As a general rule, try to avoid supplementing with a hormone the body naturally produces. The body tends to reduce or stop doing so naturally.I strongly discourage using melatonin, other than short term low dose exceptions, such as getting over jet lag, etc. High dosages over long periods of time is a bad idea.
As an RN. You are speaking of up and down regulation. This is not unhealthy for most if taken at this does, supplementation is completely fine and will not prohibit the production or uptake of melatonin to any concerning degree for most. Melatonin is completely safe for the vast majority of the population. In fact, it's a powerful antioxidant and could be viewed as a healthy supplement.

Melatonin expert and practicing physician here. This does not constitute a therapeutic relationship, and I'm not offering medical advice to anyone, sharing only for informational purposes.

As TealCalendar1895 wrote already, taking melatonin does not suppress the body's own melatonin production.

The People who poo-poo melatonin use are mostly people trying to sell you something else that costs you more or makes them more money than they could make selling melatonin, or people who believed what they heard from those people.

Melatonin is safe. Daily use- no problem.

Glycinate is the worst form for electrolyte replacement. Malate and Citrate are suited for that, slight edge for Malate
Mag citrate can't be absorbed, which is why it's used as a bowel prep. Quit trying to give people terrible diarrhea!

This isn't supposed to be a substitute for melatonin. Melatonin helps you fall asleep, but can lead to you waking up in the night. This is meant to help you get a full night's sleep, but falling asleep is on you.

With only 90mg of elemental mag you would want maybe 2-3 of these every night. I use doctors best, I like that one.
Actually only 14% Mag in total weight, so around 70mg per tablet. I never know the math of some brands. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

FWIW I've been using the "Calm [costco.com]" drink powder. I would say it makes me wake up more well rested. On nights I don't take it, I wake up with sore muscles like I was tense all night. I also have noticeable improvements in sleep score on my galaxy watch (multiple factors go into that number).

It's easy to drink, tart.

If Magnesium Glycinate didn't work for you, try Magnesium Taurate, it also helps with relaxation and sleep. Some people don't tolerate glycine supplementation well.

I take the Costco Magnesium Glycinate, particularly to help with electrolytes and night leg cramps. I highly recommend subscribing to this YouTube channel. Ojais Doctors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=649EWchJn-M
There are a lot of MD and PharmD on this board, I'm taking 2 Costco's one every day, I can take this 1 daily instead?

Shouldn't a practicing physician mention something about dosages as well? Saying melatonin is safe regardless of dose isn't good advice
