Notice the grooves in the press. Couple things, it would press the ground meat into the grooves as you're smashing and would make the burger stick to the press when you lift it off, which would destroy the maillard effect you're going for with a smash burger. Also, the grooves would prevent you from smoothly twisting and sliding the press off the meat after you smash.
For $9, I see lots of other cast iron presses with smooth bottoms. Actually, $8-9 seems to be the sweet spot for these things, so this isn't really a slick deal at all.
Was interested to use for smashburgers too, but think I'll pass.
