The small soup bowl on the bottom has a gasket on the top which prevents leaks, but other 3 containers will leak if they are tipped sideways which makes this kit very messy if you try to pack anything with any amount of sauce or other non-solid foods. Even a container with all solid hot food will still create some condensation which leaks out the side and makes everything wet. This is the only product I've ever bought from Zojirushi that had a sub-par design and didn't work well. If they just designed all 4 containers with leakproof lids this would be a great set. As it is currently designed this is not a good deal at any price since it leaks and becomes very messy and annoying to have to make sure it always stays perfectly upright and never tilted. A better and much cheaper option is roughly $6 (4x $1.50.ea) which consists of 4 small 1-cup stacking Rubbermaid EasyFindLid containers with lids which works better since those are leak-resistant when tipped sideways and are about the same size as this, just without the cool jar to put them in. They fit in a canvas wine tote bag I found for $0.50 so my whole lunch setup cost $6.50 vs this leaky Zojirushi set for $32.

With anything not "leak proof" I cover with Saran Wrap on top before closing the lid. It usually helps a ton!
