Death Stranding is a striking PS4 delivery and exploration game that stands out for its visuals and soundtrack, with a distinctive Kojima story and a lot of dialogue. The core loop of hauling cargo and building up preppers gets praise, and the Director's Cut on PS5 is repeatedly framed as the better version, with an upgrade path reportedly around $10. The main drawbacks are the slow, repetitive feel of the gameplay for some and the long, confusing cinematics. It is a strong fit if the unusual style and patience it demands sound appealing.
Players who enjoy long, atmospheric delivery games, because the visuals, soundtrack, and prepper routes make the traversal loop rewarding.
It has a lot of dialogue and a very strange Kojima-style story, but the delivery gameplay, visuals, and soundtrack are strong. If you want to skip cinematics and focus on hauling cargo and building routes, that approach can make the game more enjoyable.
A PS5 upgrade path exists and is reported to cost about $10, with the Director's Cut included. If you plan to play on PS5, that version is generally the better route.
The PS4 version is playable, but the Director's Cut on PS5 is the preferred version when available. The PS4 copy can still be a good buy at around $10 if you mainly want the base game.
The game's asynchronous online elements are tied to PS Plus on PS4, so without an active subscription you may not get the full online interaction features. The core single-player delivery gameplay still works offline.
Sorry for triple post I'm on mobile, but always like to say for this game, I enjoy the "amazon delivery driver sim" gameplay actually (despite feeling like I'm being groomed to be an underpaid contract worker for an AI corporate overlord), and didn't really care for the combat, and REALLY felt like the story and cinematics were very skippable. The world is intentionally confusing and it doesn't make any more sense by the end.
Respect to kojima but when I finished this game I felt like I enjoyed my time delivering stuff around the map and 5-starring preppers but I wished I could have just skipped all the cinematics and gotten those hours (and hours and hours) of my life back lol. My advice to new players: if you feel an urge to just skip cinematics and get back to the game… do it lol. I stuck with the story despite that urge and ultimately regretted it.
But the game for $10 or $20 w upgrade definitely gets my recommend otherwise!
I have the PS4 Pro jailbroken on 11.00. Been thinking about downloading this one for visuals. I guess I'm sad to hear there's bad reviews on the story.
