Death Stranding is a striking PS4 delivery and exploration game that stands out for its visuals and soundtrack, with a distinctive Kojima story and a lot of dialogue. The core loop of hauling cargo and building up preppers gets praise, and the Director's Cut on PS5 is repeatedly framed as the better version, with an upgrade path reportedly around $10. The main drawbacks are the slow, repetitive feel of the gameplay for some and the long, confusing cinematics. It is a strong fit if the unusual style and patience it demands sound appealing.
The game has previously been given away for free on Epic Games, which supports strong value context for the PS4 price.
The game's visuals and soundtrack can stand out on PS4, including interest in using a PS4 Pro for improved visuals.
The Director's Cut version can be the better route when available, since it is described as superior to other editions.
The delivery and prepper activities can feel enjoyable, even when combat and cinematics do not.
The gameplay loop can feel monotonous, especially when it centers on being a mule on wheels.
The story and cinematics can feel skippable or confusing, and finishing the game may leave regret about spending time on them.
The game can include a lot of dialogue, so patience may be needed to stay engaged.
Online interaction elements on PS4 may require an active PS+ subscription, which can limit features for players without it.
