also don't understand the the warranty process You have to ship the whole machine back?? which means you have to keep all the boxes.
Do you have to pay for shipping or a pain you need to warranty so that they come on site to fix it but I think it's a higher price I got this for my Lenovo priority on site. It was only like 80 bucks so I didn't care, but if something breaks, they're coming to my house to fix it.
I never bought it nor tried it to confirm, but that's what the rep told me as they always try to upsell me warranty when I'm trying to get free computers from HP. Iykyk
A manufacturer can pull a product for a defect or other production issue and refurbish it even before it reaches the customer.
The reason they don't just sell it as new under everyone's noses is because they often use a third party company to perform the refurbishment and save on labor costs.
Most companies go a step further and make the "used" or "pre-owned" distinction when a product has actually been returned and not refurbished.
I guarantee that you've purchased something that's been first party refurbished and haven't been the wiser. It happens all the time with recalls.
But wise people look at it this way: If there's a possibility of a product having a problem, do I want the one that's already been fixed before I buy it... or do I want to spend the time discovering the problem and then having to deal with it on my time?
I'd much rather have something that's had a little extra attention spent on it, especially with how poorly everything is made these days.
Buying stuff at a discount is my new hobby --- get rid of it break even after using it (free rental) or sell it higher to offset costs I can't recover.
I buy GPUs, specifically 5090 pre-built - HPs are the best for this. I've bought I think 7 5090 PC's since March. (1 was Lenovo which I will keep since I actually got 3 full year warranty as it was just $80 for on-site 1 day service just in case I run it too damn hard).
I will buy other GPUs only when it's a good deal like I got the 5070 TIs and a 5080 in the last 2 weeks.
Most people don't believe the MATH works but I just spent $15.5K on 4 machines with 5090's and they the computers (without the 5090 GPUS are basically free). The mental gymnastics they do is kind of funny when it's my money and I guess they are worried. or just can't believe it actually works (my username I'm sure triggers them a bit but I've had this way before he went a little crazy and when I was just going for Solar/Electric power thing... save the planet blah blah)
They can do mental gymnastics all they want. I am giving away 2 computers from the last 4 I bought and I am not losing money at all. I'm actually ahead.
Ultra 7 265K with 16GB, 1TB NVME, one with a beautiful Jonsbro Z20 case that was $100 + new PSU $50 so I'm in the hole deeper with one of the machines. One kid is getting the stock Omen case cuz I don't know this kid (friend's kid) so I'm not spending more money. I am selling that one at my Cost - GPU sell = her cost. (ok so this one isn't totally free but she's getting hell of a computer for a super cheap price... ie: less than the cost of the CPU alone.
Oh who knows if I'm really buying these things or playing with AI with the gear.
