If you don't care about it being new, these run about $100 used on reverb

Depends on what you need and want. Look at a used TC electric hyper gravity or mini hyper gravity. For about $60 you can get lots of compressor options in a single box including spectral compression. And if will to do some tweaking you can adjust lists of hidden parameters and basically create your own comp and save it using a computer and the time print app.

Interesting sounds cool. But I work in IT during the day so any computer/phone to tweak the settings seems more like work than fun music time.

I'm an IT manager/consultant. The point is the option is there if you want to tweak it one time to create something hyper tailored to you.

You can also use the pedal without ever connecting a computer or phone and it has enough knobs to tweak there too.

Point is the pulp is only one type of compression you either like it or you don't. The gravity lets you chose what type of comp you want loaded.

I've been playing for over 35 years and owned at least 10 compressors, the gravity is fantastic for the sub $200 price range and it sell for $60 used.

I'm with you on this. I work in accounting, but still my brain is too tired for a hobby that requires more than turning a few knobs.

sound/compression aside, pulp n peel has an XLR output which is its own unique thing, as well as a Rat/dirt circuit

I think you're looking at older versions. V4 "estimated range" says $121-179 currently

This is the most versatile JHS Pedal. I've owned the Double Barrel, Preamp, some of their fuzz pedals. If you want one pedal for your tone, the Pulp n Peel is it.

XLR is only of use if it is last in your chain, and honeslty that is going to be pretty rare on a comp. And realistically any legitimate venue is going to do give you a DI Box negating any need for an XLR out.

As for the rat circuit. Yes, I'm a big fan of the RAT circuit and have a few different boutique rats in my collection. The are all better than what is built in, and you also have to be aware that it is an "either or" thing with the pedal you basically turn the comp all the way off to use it like a RAT.

The hypergravity mini + a used boutique RAT is something you can grab for the same price and give you better options (other than the XLR function which basically no one is really going to use.

If you want one pedal for your tone (and run into an amp), something like the TC Electronics Plethora X1 offers a lot more tonal options at the same price point.

amazing that you think you know whether or not anyone needs an XLR out. ever think it could be used to record a clean direct output to have as a mixing option? or that people DO in fact put a compressor as the last in their recording chain? you keep doing you though, I'm sure you have some incredible recording credits to your name

You wouldn't believe the credits I have if I told you.

But no, anyone recording as a clean direct out shouldn't really be using this as the option. And my suggestion of a Gravity pedal is a FAR better option for a last in chain comp, and even as a "clean" direct out, compressor or not.

If you knew anything you would know that the Dan Armstrong orange peel comp circuit (which is what JHS used) is a vintage feedback style comp that is ideal for a low-level unbuffered signal (i.e. passive pickup levels) and looses the transparency if you hit it at the end of a chain where the signal gets hotter and more buffered.

The only argument for the JHS is the fact you can run dual 1/4 and XLR out (say for to your amp and to the direct console). But if that is really the intended purpose there are also better options for that. And that purpose is typically more for Bass (or live acoustic) work, and there a way better options on that front for both.
