This is a budget Galaxy A37 5G deal that stands out for its midrange specs, long software support, and strong value as a backup or travel phone. The 6.7 inch AMOLED display, 5,000 mAh battery, IP68 rating, and six years of updates make it appealing, and it also gets praise for emulation and decent camera performance. The main drawbacks are the 6GB RAM, no microSD slot, and reports of noticeable One UI lag. Metro's 365 day unlock lock and frequent port in and checkout problems are the biggest caveats.
Common Questions (8)
Yes, a Google Voice number can work for the port-in promo, but it often needs to be unlocked in Google Voice first and may need a linked live mobile number plus the $3 Google Voice unlock fee. Enter the GV number as the account number, use the GV voicemail PIN, and some checkouts may still reject it depending on Metro's validation.
Some users report the phone can work with a T-Mobile SIM or eSIM setup, but others hit no-service, calling, or messaging issues until they toggle SIM settings, reset, or re-seat the SIM tray. It is not a guaranteed out-of-box cross-carrier use case.
It has 6GB RAM, and several comments describe noticeable UI lag compared with phones like the Moto G Stylus, even though benchmarks and some users say the chip is solid for a midrange phone. It should be fine for basic use, but it is not a speed-focused phone.
It stays locked to Metro for about a year, but it can still be used as a Wi‑Fi device or backup/travel phone during that period. Some users also transfer the eSIM to another phone or keep the device offline until unlock.
Yes. The deal can be treated as a one-month purchase if you only want the phone, then you can turn off autopay and let the prepaid line expire; the unlock clock still runs from activation. Some users also mention downgrading or moving the eSIM later, but the phone remains locked until the 12-month requirement is met.
The current Metro unlock policy is 365 days of active service starting from activation. The phone is not expected to unlock after just one month, and the unlock typically happens 1-2 days after the 12-month mark.
No. Storage is fixed at the included 128GB because there is no microSD expansion slot.
A Tello number is generally not eligible because it runs on the T-Mobile network, and similar T-Mobile/MVNO-origin numbers can be rejected by Metro's promo checker. Numbers from non-T-Mobile carriers or some other MVNOs are more likely to pass.

He is factoring in the required first month plan payment. So compared to $40 for this phone its $165 . There is a separate thread
256gb is still twice the storage of 128gb
By biggest issue with either of these deals is the lock. The AT&T deal at Walmart has a trick to unlock it but I recall having a major headache last time I tried that.
It's tempting just because of the RAM and storage. 6GB seems very limiting.

Note, ordering over the phone, they charged me $45 instead of $40. Still quite the deal though.
"$40/mo. with AutoPay $45 for first month"
Below are the facts from Claude.
This matches consistent, well-documented experience: Google Voice numbers—even unlocked ones with the $3 porting fee paid—generally do not qualify for Metro by T-Mobile's port-in promotional offers.
Why it's not a zip code or process issue:
- Metro appears to distinguish between VOIP numbers and mobile numbers for port-in promotions, and a Google Voice number was specifically told not to count for port-in promos, despite having worked in the past.
- A more recent (2026-adjacent) discussion on a Galaxy S25 port-in deal explicitly states: Google Voice and NumberBarn do not work for Metro port-ins — the number must be a non-T-Mobile number. This directly confirms your experience.
- The technical reason is that Google Voice numbers are VOIP-based, not tied to a physical SIM/mobile network account the way a "real" carrier line is. Promotional port-in offers are designed to poach subscribers away from another physical carrier (AT&T, Verizon, Cricket, etc.), and Metro's backend eligibility check for these promos appears to filter out VOIP-originated numbers even when the port itself is technically executable.
What this means for you:- The port likely failed at the promotional eligibility validation step, not the technical porting step — these are separate systems. Google Voice numbers can sometimes be ported to Metro as a paid, non-promotional new line, but that's different from the "free phone" port-in deals.
- Zip code won't fix this, since it's a number-type restriction, not a store/regional restriction.
Workarounds people have used (per the same threads):- Buy a cheap prepaid SIM from another physical carrier (e.g., a Tracfone/AT&T/Verizon MVNO SIM), activate it to get a genuine mobile number, let it sit briefly, then port that number to Metro instead of the Google Voice number.
- Some people source "port-in only" numbers from marketplaces (eBay listings, etc.) for this exact purpose — though obviously verify legitimacy before paying anyone for this.
If you want, I can look into which specific budget carriers/MVNOs are most commonly confirmed to work for Metro's current port-in promos.Good for you. I hate Metro.

I was also able to port my Google Voice number. The number was generated ~6-7 months ago.
There's probably nothing wrong with the company. But they rejected every phone number I tried to port.
