Yes, discharge the phone to 50%, turn it off, and throw it in a drawer. It will auto-unlock 11 months later. You can also use it as a WiFi device for the 11 months without service.
I get one of these phones every few years and use it as a travel phone when we travel abroad. No banking information, no cash app, no brokerage apps on the phone. Never need to worry if it gets stolen, lost, or broken.

I tried this deal yesterday on a number I created on Google Voice just yesterday.
I forgot to unlock it and it got held up in limbo. When I tried again it said "this number is not available,,, something something, and it gave me a different deal with new number.
I tied the mobileX somone recommended, no good because I not had a new enough spare Sim card.
Then I found USMobile for $4.98, and Sim card delivered free.
But before I pulled the trigger on USMobile I tried chat with Metro.
I told them truth, that I forgot to release the number with my carrier, and it is released now, but account creation is stuck in limbo.
When asked what carrier, I said Google 😂, They probably though Google Fi but it's still the trough.
They said my number is on a port hold and to call this number for porting a phone number help.

Called, said same story, they cleared the port holdup, then they checked if it's still available, it was,,, and bam, done and done.
Just successfully placed the order.
