A non-modular PSU basically has all of the cables in a giant harness and they look very ugly as you twist this clump of cables out of the way. Want a stylized, clean, organized looking tower with great cable management? Fully Modular is not an option for a gamer. It adds no quality or power advantage at all. This is purely for aesthetics. The cool thing also, is it allows you to buy often better after-market cables with various colors. For example, my tower is white and black themed, and I have a fantastic PSU I got an amazing deal on, but it just had these boring black cables. So, I bought these super slick white cables that make my cable management feel so much more premium and cables were only like $35 extra maybe. Worth it for the aesthetics.

Third, 80 PLUS Gold or Platinum should be what you aim for as a gamer. This offers no better gaming performance, but as a gamer, you typically are drawing anywhere from 2x to 4x as much power to your computer than you would be not gaming. GPUs are power hungry. While it is not a huge difference at first, in the long run, it makes a difference. Gold means 90% energy efficient, and Platinum is 92%. Compare that to Bronze, which is 85% efficient. Doing the math, that means if you are pulling 600W from the wall, your Gold PSU is using 540W for power to your system, and 60W gets turned into heat, whilst a Bronze, at 85% efficiency, is turning 90W into heat inside the PSU. So, again, as a gamer, you want a more efficient PSU because you are using so much more electricity. Efficiency matters. You are wasting less, there is less heat in your PSU, this often results in quieter operation because of less heat waste, and the reality is this, Gold/Platinum rated stuff often comes with higher end components as they are higher-end PSUs. Not guaranteed, but your budget PSUs tend to also go cheaper on components as well. So, don't always assume Gold means it is better than Bronze, it might still be a cheap and crappy built PSU with cheap components. You need a master list to compare. I will give that at the end of this.

And finally, this is a 100% non-negotiable and necessary feature of a PSU that is for gamers. It must have native 12V-2x6 cable. Not all GPUs use this, but the top end GPUs all do. A high quality power supply can easily last you 10+ years without failing, so think to the future and future upgrades. Don't limit yourself because you didn't need it now. This is the current standard of the foreseeable future of all higher end GPUs. Make sure yours has this native support.

This particular PSU by MSI actually gets a solid B+ score, which is very good, especially for this price.

I agree with almost everything here and great post. Worth mentioning for your 2nd point is that most cases with glass panels have a compartment for the PSU, which keeps it out of sight. For me, a modular PSU is more about getting the absolute best airflow by not having unused cables in the build.

This is actually an outstanding PSU.

Scroll down and look at the efficiency ratings. The amount of "black" (>92% effficiency) through most of its useable range puts this in the toppest of tiers for a good computer psu. $100 is a great deal

One more important point to add that many people get confused by:

Just because it's rated for a maximum wattage, doesn't mean it's ALWAYS automatically pulling that wattage.

A 1000W PSU is only going to pull 1000W if you load it up with 950W worth of components AND run it at max load.

Even if you don't plan to run the highest consumption components available, giving yourself a massive buffer in overhead does two beneficial things:

- It makes your PSU relatively future proof. Hardware is only trending upward in consumption, even when it becomes more power efficient on average.

- It puts less strain on the power components. You should be aiming for no more than 85% load. Treat your PSU well and it will last you through multiple builds.


Another tip: There are calculators to determine what your ROI will be on going with 80Plus Platinum (there's also Titanium now) over 80Plus Gold.

In my case, I calculated it to about 4 years with 1000W consumption, gaming 8 hours a week, and with a $100 price difference between the Gold and Platinum.

If you use your system for work, it can pay off in under a year.

After that, it's pure savings and the benefit of a potentially longer lasting unit.
