I can't imagine the cable itself is communicating a different charge rate? So does everything get 5v 2a or something?

The total output of the charger you're using will be divided amongst the devices connected. They cannot each get the total output of the charger connected. The laws of electricity still apply here.
At 0.5A per device, be prepared for a LONG charging cycle. Ideally, you need to get a charger that has multiple outputs - where each output has a specified capacity (say 1A each). This cable just runs multiple devices in parallel.
Most likely the configuration channel (CC) pins are not connected so devices default to 5V shared by all. Some chargers may be finicky at outputting 5V without negotiation, my WattBricks from Meh/SideDeals is one, even the USB-A out port is finicky and it turns off with valid devices connected.
