The iPhone 16e deal is mainly about getting an AT&T locked 128GB phone at a lower upfront price, with eSIM use possible right away on some carriers. The strongest appeal is the discounted in store activation price, but it comes with prepaid service requirements and a much longer unlock timeline than expected, now cited as 12 months of paid AT&T service. Walmart activation is highly inconsistent, with some stores lacking the right wireless setup or ringing the phone up at full price. The model also has no physical SIM, so it is a fit only if the carrier lock and activation hurdles are acceptable.
Common Questions (5)
Yes. The $199 price requires activating one month of AT&T prepaid in store; without activation, the phone is $299 out the door. Some Walmart locations also may not perform the activation at all, so the deal can be location-dependent.
It can work on AT&T-based service such as US Mobile Dark Star while still locked, but it will not unlock unless the AT&T prepaid service requirement is met. It may not switch freely to other networks until unlocked, and some carriers like Cricket can have their own longer lock rules.
AT&T's current prepaid unlock requirement is 12 months of paid AT&T service, with the device not active on another AT&T account and not reported lost, stolen, or fraudulent. That means the phone stays locked for a year before it can be unlocked.
Yes. Apple still accepts locked trade-ins and checks the device condition rather than the carrier lock status.
No. The US iPhone 16e model mentioned does not include a physical SIM, so activation is eSIM-based.

The second the FCC allowed VVB to go to 1 year almost all of them moved to 1 year, inc ATT Prepaid. I think mint may be the last holdout but I'm sure they will revert to the mean soon enough.
