The iPhone 16e deal is mainly about getting an AT&T locked 128GB phone at a lower upfront price, with eSIM use possible right away on some carriers. The strongest appeal is the discounted in store activation price, but it comes with prepaid service requirements and a much longer unlock timeline than expected, now cited as 12 months of paid AT&T service. Walmart activation is highly inconsistent, with some stores lacking the right wireless setup or ringing the phone up at full price. The model also has no physical SIM, so it is a fit only if the carrier lock and activation hurdles are acceptable.
Apple trade-in acceptance reportedly does not require the device to be carrier-unlocked.
AT&T prepaid unlock eligibility can be checked by inserting a non-AT&T SIM card into the iPhone.
AT&T prepaid unlock policy requires 12 months of paid AT&T service, which provides a clear timeline for planning.
The phone can reportedly be eSIM activated on US Mobile right away after purchase.
Walmart stores reportedly may not activate the phone in-store, which can prevent getting the advertised $199 deal.
Keeping the phone locked for 12 months reportedly makes the deal not worthwhile for buyers planning to switch sooner.
The $199 in-store price reportedly requires activating on AT&T prepaid, otherwise the out-the-door cost can be $299.
AT&T's unlock requirements reportedly include not being active on another AT&T account, which can complicate switching plans.

(1) $199 out the door
Or
(2) $199 plus $49/mo plan which = $249

I went to 3 Walmart stores:
1st Walmart store: No OSI rep there to get the deal, sent me to a another nearby store
2nd Walmart store: OSI rep could not replcate the deal because their store did not show any in stock except tthere was one behind the counter. She said it rings up for the full price of $499 and she cannot change the price even thought the Wlamart website shows the deal. Tried to sell me a post paid plan. Sent me to a third nearby Wlamart that had it in stock.
3rd Walmart: Good OSI rep was there. Good he knew about the deal. The Bad when he went to ring it up the total came up to $499+ tax+ activation fee. I showed him the Walmart website that says $199. He looked for about 20 minutes on his screen and showed me the deal and a picture on his register that it was for $199 but when he rang it up and totaled it it came up as $499. He called his supervisor then said this deal expeired last week even though the webisite says good until October 26, 2026. Another 15 mintues of researching and calling other people said: SORRY deal expired in our OSI system.
Walmart managers and OSI reps are a joke.....Big waste of time and a big YMMV. Besides if you look around there are other ways of getting an ATT IPhone 16e cheaper.
This is the second time I tried to get the deal in December and now in July and Walmart and OSI I feel are using a bait and switch.
