My 24V Toro cordless trimmer battery is now 13 years old and gets used quite often as do my Greenworks 80V ones which are in their 5th year of mowing three 0.3 acre lawns weekly from March to October.

Gas mowers also have their advantages and the most obvious is they'll run as long as there's fuel and can be stored virtually anywhere year round.

Due to the chemistry in all of these mower batteries, the ideal storage is room temperature and out of direct sunlight when not in use which minimizes heat exposure. Discharge cycles when using them causes the batteries to warm which is of course unavoidable. Ideally, you want the batteries to fully cool at room temperature and away from direct sunlight for at least 2 hours before recharging (and same in reverse once charging is complete despite the charger having a cooling fan as the internals are still at somewhat of a raised temp). This practice helps maximize the lifespan of these batteries since it minimizes their prolonged heat exposure to elevated temperatures. Maybe manufacturers aren't publishing this in their manuals because they'd rather sell replacement batteries or fear people may not want to buy their tools in the first place if this is what they recommend because for some it's not practical, especially if it's a 6 pack of them for a mower like this one.

Sheesh... 3K machine that the aftermarket care may or may not be as sketchy as a random Chinese brand. Craftsman, Honda, John Deere and even MTD gas mower have parts and some basis of support that will indeed keep a mower running for decades.
Greenworks, Ego and others need to step it up !
As for batteries the fact they are removable does let you buy a second set. My Ego batteries are currently in my cool basement and live a decent life span (Greater than 5 years for sure). Yet not everyone will desire to "baby" their batteries.
On the same token, many won't properly winterize their gas mower. (Humm Bob2012 is spot on)
As far as price the Ego batteries are a mint $$$ the Greenworks seem to be more reasonable.
Ive just bought my first generic Ego battery and so far so good. (uh after returning the DOA first one (Waitly brand))
Battery tech has gone way down in price, the battery prices for these machines, as with most cordless tool system, are kept artificially high.
Some advice on buying batteries yes if you baby them you can keep them running for a long time, but they will still lose some capacity. Thus, when you have a choice generally always go for the BIGGER battery.
