($1999 for m4 pro base with 512gb storage, +200 for 14/20-core config, +400 for 48gb option, +200 for 1tb, +400 for 2tb storage)
The 16" 1TB M4 Max 48gb for $3300 that was recently posted is the better deal (that config was $3999 full retail at launch and is currently $3740 on Apple's Certified Refubished site, versus the config here which was $3199 at launch and would be ~$3141 on Apple refurbished site).
Community Reviews
This MacBook Pro is a high memory, high storage workstation aimed at local AI and heavy coding, with 48GB unified memory and a 2TB SSD. The 48GB tier is described as a strong sweet spot for most local models, and the machine is said to handle local LLMs up to about 35B. At $2,999, it lands well below comparable new M5 Pro configurations and under the cheapest Apple used 48GB equivalent. The main hesitation is value, since older M4 Pro deals and some recent M5 Pro offers were lower, so the price feels less compelling than the spec sheet alone suggests.
The $2,999 price is positioned as closer to Apple refurbished pricing than launch retail, which can make the purchase feel more aligned with refurbished value.
The configuration can run local LLMs up to about a 35B model, which supports coding and local AI workflows without relying solely on subscriptions.
The M4-to-M5 upgrade cost difference is framed as worth paying when comparing comparable Apple Certified Refurbished 48GB/2TB options, which helps clarify upgrade value.
The 48GB unified memory target is described as a strong fit for most local AI models, which can reduce the need to overspend on higher RAM tiers.
The deal is questioned as potentially older inventory, with uncertainty about whether memory and SSD pricing has already been "eaten" by prior discounts.
The $2,999 offer is challenged against prior M5 Pro pricing around the low $2,300s, which makes the current deal feel less compelling.
The $2,999 price is criticized as not competitive versus other recent comparable configurations, including a Micro Center purchase at $2,379 for an M5 Pro/1TB spec.
The pricing is criticized as disproportionately high for RAM and storage, with commenters pointing to large markups between 1TB and 2TB configurations.

nvm. M4 Pro, can only get refurb now I think. hard to compare the cost
M5 Pro version is around $3800 ($3600 binned chip) I guess $3000 is a deal. CPU not worth $800 more.
