These metal fuel cans are valued for practical storage and generator use, with a spout that fits into the can and an opening that works with a cheap transfer pump. The cans are also described as easier to store and transport than short plastic cans, and the metal build is preferred over plastic safety valves. The main concerns are thin steel, outside welds, and seams that may wobble or leak over time, especially when heat causes expansion. A few reports also mention fading or ballooning in sun, though some cans have stayed leak free for months or even years.

  • The pour spout design can fit into the can opening, which may reduce gasket-related leaks seen with independent-piece spouts.

  • The can can work with a cheap GF transfer pump because the opening fits that pump better than GI style nozzle cans.

  • The container can hold heavy fuel loads without skipping a beat during road travel.

  • The container can serve as a secure third generator fuel source after about two years of use.

  • The build quality can be inconsistent, including reports of thin metal, leaky seals, and handle weld failure.

  • The weld seam running down the middle can prevent the cans from sitting flush, which may concentrate weight on the seam and hurt long-term integrity.

  • The metal fuel can can expand and contract in heat when not kept fully filled, which can cause creases and increase leak risk.

  • Fuel can leak from a pinhole after use, which creates a practical spill hazard.

More of a yard worker than a forest trekker. It is rated for 2,800 pounds and I've had 3,000 in it. Didn't skip a beat…..actually road better.

Interesting. Mine haven't faded and they've been outside for months in well over 100* heat index.
i'll send pics tomorrow of the ones at work ... maybe the southern texas sun is different ..lol ... when you put the hose on it does yours leak when pouring fuel?? all of ours leaks like a sieve...

No leaks yet but only had them a few months. My black one didn't fade either. I thought if anything, that one would fade first.

I have some (also knockoff) Sportsman's Guide pretend jerry cans that look alarmingly like this however they really expand and contract with heat if left closed (full or empty) to causes creases on the can. I assume too thin gauge metal and complete lack of any kind of relief...I guess that also means the welds and gaskets are decent since pressure / negative pressure can't escape....so that is a plus.

Surprisingly neither has leaked on me with all of the flexing but wondering if this have the same issue. Can't find any evidence if those complaints in the reviews though.
I've got 5 of the sportsmans, yes if they're not 100% full they will expand in the heat. The quality is questionable, I have one that the handle weld is failing and a second that leaks at the top can seam. They are still head and shoulders about any plastic can with those stupid safety valves.

That's why I am leaning towards these too. I have a bit of acreage (plus store fuel before I might need to use a generator). The metal cans are far easier to store and transport vs the short / fat plastic ones, and like you said, the valves are such a PITA on the plastic cans.

Also I like the concept of these cans having the pour spout fit into the can vs the Sportmans cans which it is an independent piece that must be attached. Those always leak when pouring (at the gasket...which I've tried replacing but the connection doesn't mate flat...the gasket would need to be tapered to work).

*Props to the Sportmans cans, they did come with some robust mounts though. I had them mounted in the back of a pickup truck for extended travel trailer trips. Their green cans were really strangely painted though. Camo green but the highest gloss imaginable. You could blind the ISS with the glare Wink

Ordered, thanks op. My 5 gallon plastic midwest brand I bought at BJ's are complete trash.
Are they complete trash because of the way they pour? That's a result of epa regulations. You can find new old school sprouts online

Fuel expands too and unlike air is NOT a compressible fluid so it cannot build pressure (the same extent) to accommodate the extra volume, ***that volume must go somewhere***, like the walls of the gas can. Thus my question.

https://www.ricochetfuel.com/blog...ntraction/

https://autoexpert.com.au/posts/p...emperature

Let's pretend fuel doesn't expand.....I still have the issue even with a small amount of air in the top. I could vastly overfill (to the brim) the can but that isn't a good idea either since it could lead to leaking if the seal wasn't perfect and also would almost guarantee spilled / wasted fuel when attempting my first pour. (actually leaving MORE air, since fuel isn't compressible would be the solution to this interpretation). MORE air would allow for greater expansion / contraction headroom vs a incompressible liquid which is going to require the container to accommodate the volume changes).

Not to mention, fuel cans are meant to be used. Your solution only works (again, pretending fuel does not expand) if the can is 100% full. What if I need to dispense some of the can then store the other half for later? For example for generator or tool use which likely would not require the entire 5.3 gallons at one time?
I hate that you're being downvoted so much. We bring fuel cans to Burning Man- fuel absolutely does expand under the daytime sun there. It's actually kinda a problem- you have to store your cans well so you don't leak all over the place.

Good thing your gas cans don't care about the index

Burning man?!? And I was worried about NC heat Wink

P.S. Concerning downvotes, I don't worry about them too much. Especially here...some of these people act like I am making up that matter expands and contracts with heat. Not exactly rocket science. And the entire concept of "just keep your cans full," even if that worked, what are you supposed to do if you actually need to use some (but not all) of your fuel? Just pour out the rest? Plus, like you alluded to, leaking due to pressure. I tried that on a long RV trip and I ended up with gas all over the bed of my truck. Not exactly optimal. At this point I just use the Sportsman Guide cans when I storm prep before a ice storm or hurricane so I have fuel for my generator. If I don't need it, it goes straight into a car as soon as I have room in the tank. Cans look like crap because they have ballooned so many times, but they still hold gas so they serve some purpose.

If they are full of fuel with no air inside, they won't expand/contract at all since fuel doesn't drastically change volume at different temperatures like air does.

I would totally avoid this website. They are rebranded items that are often low quality. Their service is abysbal and doesn't understand or read English so they resort to stock replies when certain keywords are in the email. See what happened to me https://slickdeals.net/f/19774641-vevor-35a-smart-battery-charger-for-lifepo4-lead-acid-batteries-57-free-s-h?p=185972331#post185972331

Would've like to have seen those pics. Mine haven't faded, but that doesn't mean they won't. Actually thought about clear coating them as I have a few cans leftover from painting the truck.
