This is a 16 inch gaming laptop aimed at desktop replacement performance, with the 330W power supply pointing to a higher wattage RTX 5070 Ti setup rather than a slimmed down version. The 5.5 pound chassis is fairly typical for this class, and the RAM and storage are upgrade friendly with two SO DIMM slots, up to 64GB, and two M.2 slots. The OLED panel and strong cooling are the main appeal, with similar Gigabyte models showing high frame rates and reasonable GPU temperatures. The main knocks are the bulky charger, the 12GB VRAM, and a 1TB SSD at this price.

5.5 lbs isn't a brick for a 16" laptop unless you are trying to compare it to macbooks or something. Plenty of gaming laptops at this size push into the low to mid 6s lol.
It's a brick. My old 2022 Asus M16 is 4.5lb. Even that is edging on heavy. Just because it's a "gaming" laptop doesn't mean it needs to be a heavy brick automatically.

5.5 vs 4.5 isn't brick vs not brick, and yes actually gaming laptops have a whole lot of requirements other systems don't. Your old M16 was top of it's class and priced to match at the time. And importantly it was specifically a thin and light downgrade, it ran slower than the "bricks" in the gaming category.

Almost everything with a gaming laptop is a tradeoff, physics doesn't care if you have unlimited money, it takes room and weight to evacuate the amount of wattage in heat these machines put out.

Anyways, yes I guess if you don't know what you are getting into with a gaming laptop the weight might surprise you. If you do though, 5.5 lbs at 16" is within a half lb of standard. Not like this is a HP Omen that breaks 6 lbs on 16".

Recently (from Woot/SD here) picked up a X16 Aero (Gigabyte) 370HX/5070. Playing Cyberpunk 2077 on high/ultra, full resolution, DLSS is nice, and running @/~170FPS and a whopping 69-71C on the GPU. Last laptop was a Legion 16ACH6, I'll never do that again, fell back to a Dell 7577 (think that's right, 1060MaxQ) and had the realization, lower power, less heat, less heat, less death. This is good. Time will tell.

What issues did you have with your Legion 16ACH6? That was my last laptop with a 5800H/3070 in it, and I loved it, curious what went wrong for you as I sold both of them to a friend maybe a year ago and would like to give him a heads up. I would take it apart every 9-12 months to clean the fans and stufff, never really had heat issues.

Eyyy, same CPU/GPU. Most likely solder under the CPU fracture, they used a low temp solder (~133C) that is pretty well known to fail. The PTM wasn't cutting it wildly after the first year or so, and I did what you did as well, it'd get opened up (those pesky side grills, lol) and cleaned out regularly. Found it via this site (yay), anyhow, the motherboard died ~2.5Y after purchase (~spring '22), exhibiting power on, keyboard on, logo on back of case on, but no post, etc. The way it all works, the chipset decides to power things up based on what's going on in/under (solder) the CPU. If that fails, it doesn't power on the rest of things. Here's a video of a guy fixing one for example:

or

Anyhow, I bought a warranty (after 5Y from manufacture date, they don't offer it), waited >30d and submitted a warranty repair blah. Board was replaced. That lasted 2 years, and exhibited the exact same failure again. I don't travel with it, it would reside in two places, my lap (on a cooler pad), or the table next to my chair.

This all being said, my wife has an identical laptop, purchased 3 days prior (I liked it, decided I needed an upgrade from the 7577), and it hasn't died yet. It runs hot as F, but the fans are clean, and we're supposed to trust PTM to be "forever!", but here we all are.

Man that is crazy. I wonder if i avoided this because at around the 2 year mark I went into both mine and my wifes (we also had identical ones lol) and pulled the heatsink entirely and repasted/repadded everything. That sucks dude. Really frustrating when you do everything right in terms of cleaning and stuff and still get wrecked with heat like that. That 5800H plus full power 3070 was a lot for that chassis honestly, and you definitely couldn't do low temp solder with it...

4.5lb to 5.5lb is almost 20% difference in weight, that's pretty noticeable, but I didn't say it was brick vs non-brick. I said "even that is edging on heavy (4.5lb)". So yes, 5.5lb is heavy in my opinion.

This only applies to gaming laptops with discrete GPU's, but that shouldn't even need to suggest that any laptop with a discrete GPU = gaming laptop = big heavy brick. AMD Halo strix, Apple silicon, Intel Panther Lake all have igpu's perfectly capable of playing today's games and can be found in slimly-built laptop chassis'.

None of those 3 are comparable to what a 5070 TI can do, but yes if you are fine with lower performance (Strix/panther lake, which btw I love them lol, I just don't think they compare favorably if gaming is your main use case), OR very limited selection of games (apple silicon, also great for it's use case) then yes fair enough. That is a recent development, but yeah you can get playable gaming laptops now that only weigh a couple of pounds. You are going to pay both financially and performance wise, but fair.

I contacted BestBuy and they price matched. I did it so that I could take advantage of the financing deals with the BB credit card.

Where are you seeing a lower price on the Acer with comparable specs?

You shouldn't. Unfortunately the current gen Acer Helios Predators have really bad quality control and build problems, even by ACER standards. Which is why Acer direct has flooded the Helios Predator on ebay refurb.
