I've just used a breaker bar to release the tension. Is this better for some reason?

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank jeff34270

Some vehicles have plenty of access to the tensioner and can be easily done with a wrench or breaker bar. Others are nearly impossible without a tool like this that provides multiple options to get there and get the job done. You may not need it, but if you do, it'll turn a long frustrating job into an easy 10-minute project.

True! I grabbed the harbor freight serpentine belt [tool] and worked fine for my MDX. Had to grab this for my civic si and allowed me plenty of room

This has a ratcheting function as well so it makes doing the job a little bit easier.

Just note that this doesn't work on all cars. I had to get this one to work on a Nissan Altima

While I'm sure this would have made changing the belt itself easier, I found getting the tensioner in and out to be the harder part of the job on a j35 engine at least.

IDK, but that setup appears to be a recipe for some bloody knuckles.

It's been a while since I worked on an Altima, but I'm curious why that one worked and the Gearwrench didn't. Was it the length?

The gap between the body and the tensioner is too thin for the Gearwrench to work, there isn't enough space for the socket and tool.

I also liked the longer length as I could work from the top (since the tensioner is lower in the engine bay.

Dang, that is tight. And not in a good way.

Don't see any other discounts besides my Prime Visa $$$ points. Not sure what you're stating here.

I would skip the serpentine belt kit and get some Astro stubby sockets and ratchet
