Summary: lol - You all signed up for 'free' social media, email, and search engines that clearly state you're giving your data away, security people warned you for decades, and then go all shocked pikachu when you find out all these companies read everything you give them and run ai and algorithm training on it?
Honestly I'd just call it the age of surveillance. Is not like any political or economic movement is explicitly against surveillance. They mostly just dishes any WHO should be surveilled.

Definitely true, but I think part of this book's argument seems to be that under our capitalist system "They" have gotten "Us" to accept surveillance without force. Make something useful or fun "free" and people will be willing to give up a lot of privacy to use it.

How dare anyone have some faith in 2003 that future tech wouldn't immediately be used for evil.

As if illegal wiretaps and weaponizing surveillance for reasons other than economic either never existed or are a new phenomenon altogether. I'm not supportive of either, but at least under capitalism, the consumer has a choice.

I don't think anyone implied that they never existed or are a new phenomenon altogether. and not really but again you should read the book.

If you buy the audio narration add on is a whopping $27 - far better to use an audible credit. Wish publishers would look at how to tie in buying the ebook and the audio book with 2 good promos instead of this.

And it's human nature to abuse power. Nobody hates authoritarianism, they want to be the authority
