Is this a good build for a non-gamer? Just looking for a decent browsing/office/homework computer to replace a 2013 build that's still chugging along but not good enough to upgrade to windows 11.

You don't really need a $1000 rig for your use case. Id reckon a $500 computer would suffice.

Any recommendations? Looking for something for the next decade. I was going to build my own, but prices are quite high that there's often not much of a benefit.

For what it is the price is reasonable... and the system does leave some space to upgrade the CPU/GPU if you feel the need... hard to do much better these days for $1000 for a new system...

I'm not super updated of what's the best bang for the buck these days. But I'd imagine any upvoted MICROCENTER deal would be good.

Answering because there's another post for some ABS FLUX II from Walmart for $650. Easily save you $300 bucks for negligible use difference for you.

One of these mini PC's would work well IMHO. 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, and a Ryzen 7 CPU for $499 is a good deal. And would run for years to come.

100 % agree if you do not need gaming or any GPU heavy stuff these micro PC are way smaller cheaper and less noise than an classic desktop.

the time of ugly bulky desktops at home is over since 2023 nobody needs them anymore, if just browsing ,online bla bla is 99 % of the workload

Depends on the game. Most games will run fine on an Intel GPU.

I think the other comments very mistakenly overlooked one key point: Your current system is 13 years old.

If you plan to keep your next system for at least a decade, then no, a rinky dink mini PC isn't going to cut it for longevity.

Hardware has sort of plateaued in that you can get a lot of performance for very little (at least before the AI craze drove everything up), but software is getting progressively more demanding.

I don't see this improving at all with how many vibe-coded AI projects there are out there, with more on the way. Heck, even Microsoft is using AI for their Windows patches.

Don't pigeon hole yourself by going with something to "get you by temporarily" unless you're prepared to get another system in under 5 years.

Also, if Windows 11 is the only thing pushing you to upgrade, there's a very simple patch that will let you install 11 on unsupported hardware.

This couldn't be further from the truth.

Desktops provide way more pathways to incremental upgrades, which is why they're still preferred by people actually in tech.

Software is only getting worse and worse with everything becoming more demanding. It's going to get worse as everything becomes vibe-coded garbage.

Look at how much RAM simple chat programs like stupid Discord need. Compared to what we used to run back in the day (Vent, TS, Mumble, AIM, etc) it's pathetic.

You need to be good at multitasking to be proficient with computers these days, so settling on limited performance hardware is starting at a disadvantage. For example, Excel alone uses a ton of RAM when you actually start using it for business related spreadsheets.

Just install clean Win 11 on it if that's all you need. I run a SFF with i5 6500t for research and VMs in the garage.

When B580 was $200, it was the best GPU for gaming for the money. For 1080/1440p still a great GPU.
