Microwaves with this exact compact, rounded tabletop shape never existed historically during the mid-century era; instead, this design is a modern, romanticized blend of historical appliance trends. While the actual commercial and home consumer microwaves of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s were massive, boxy, industrial machines, this contemporary "Retro Series" appliance manufactured by Nostalgia Electrics intentionally synthesizes different mid-century design styles to evoke nostalgia.

I wish they'd stop putting out low-powered microwaves. Microwave cooking instructions are typically written for 1100 watts. Microwaves like this one at only 800 watts quickly end up in landfills when people realize it sucks and upgrade.

Low power microwaves are decent for dorms though, when you have no way to check or trust the load on a given circuit, often shared between rooms.
