This is a large rice and grain cooker that stands out for its carb reducing mode and steam basket, which appear to drain starch water during cooking. The manual calls the inner pot a ceramic coated non stick cooking pot, with a stainless steel steam basket. Real world use points to rice that cooks well without turning mushy, and the steam basket also works for reheating curries and buns without drying them out. The main tradeoff is size, since it takes real counter or storage space, and the carb reduction claim itself is hard to measure.

  • Rice cooks wanting less mushy grains, because the carb-reducing mode drains starchy water and leaves the rice less overwatered.

  • Families reheating curries or buns, because the steam basket keeps food moist instead of drying it out like a microwave.

  • Home cooks who need a large rice cooker, because it cooks well but takes up substantial counter or storage space.

  • Parents making daily rice, because the cooker has held up through three years of regular use.

  • Buyers expecting a dramatic carb-cutting effect, because the glycemic impact may be small and hard to measure.

  • Shoppers with limited counter or cabinet space, because the cooker is huge and needs room to store or leave out.

  • People who want a simple set-and-forget rice cooker, because this sits between basic on-off models and fuzzy-logic cookers.

  • Shoppers who need a compact cooker for small kitchens, because the unit is very large.

If you want basic then you're better off with a cheap rice cooker that just has on and off. If you want a good one then you want one with fuzzy logic (there could be a newer term for it - I haven't looked in a while) so you make perfect rice every time. This middleground seems pointless. Unless someone that knows more than me can explain otherwise.

You can convert the starch to resistant starch if you refrigerate it. Low glycemic and good for the gut. Works with potatoes too.

These comments about lowering the glycemic index - the measured effect was so small it only seems worth caring about if you're carefully managing your diabetes. And follow up studies have been all over the map - some confirmatory, some with no significant effect.

But does anyone actually have experience with how well this model actually cooks rice?

I usually make my rice in a pot with onion and garlic. Has anyone put onion and garlic in the rice cooker? Does it come out similar like the pot?

I wonder if they are using the Coconut oil and cooling method to reduce them.

This can be done with a normal rice cooker, the key is cooling the rice after cooking it with a small amount of coconut oil. There's medical studies that back this method up. The calories don't disappear from the food, but become resistant to digestion AFAIK.

I have this one it's huge but I love it. Cooks great but you will need space to store it or place on your counter.

I bought this a house gift for my parents during Christmas. I'm not sure why but they are obsessed with this rice cooker. Use the carb reduce function for rice and use the steam basket to reheat all sorts of curries, buns as it retains moisture and doesn't dry up like the microwave. They use theirs daily and still going strong 3 years later

I haven't made 3 cups yet myself I've only done about 1.5 cups, and that usually finishes in around 20 minutes. I would think 3 cups would take roughly a half hour.
