Often a motherboard will only have a 1x slot left. You can get a 1x card but you will be bottlenecking your SSD speeds to 2,000 MBps or less

My favorite has dual m.2 slots in a half height configuration and allows stacking a pcie x4 half height card.
Just make sure your motherboard can split PCIE slots.
That said I like this style, retained by the socket so handy if you're swapping drives, stays nice and cool. Bit fiddly to assemble, nothing special, just watch those tiny screws.

Last time I checked, it seems you need extra hardware to do this including dumping BIOS for backup / restore?
