Note: if you're going to use this in an older computer and use it as the boot disk, it may not be able to see it during boot. To get around that, you can make a bootable usb flash drive with Clover Bootloader software. Just search for "Clover Bootloader Github". The computer boots from Clover Bootloader and then is able to see the boot disk and boot from it.

Take note of the PCIe key, this requires a 4x slot or bigger.

Often a motherboard will only have a 1x slot left. You can get a 1x card but you will be bottlenecking your SSD speeds to 2,000 MBps or less

Working great so far. Got them maybe a week or so ago. I have 2 256gb nvmes. I think they're gen 2, so not super fast. Still a whole lot faster than my 4tb 3.5" hdd. Not nearly as fast as my Samsung 9100 pro 2tb and 1tb but it's nice to have them for VM backups. The drives stay cool enough.

Take note of the PCIe key, this requires a 4x slot or bigger.

Neat. I always assumed I'd do another BIOS mod for my Ivy Bridge system to boot from NVMe. I had to do that to enable ReBAR.

You can find all manner of these on Aliexpress all day long.

My favorite has dual m.2 slots in a half height configuration and allows stacking a pcie x4 half height card.


Just make sure your motherboard can split PCIE slots.

I have a couple of this style - I assume they're the same and Sabrent just put their name on them. There's no circuitry to these things so this makes no sense, but here goes. With linux kernel 7 it's not detected. My other cheapo NVME to PCIe works fine, and this one worked with kernel 5.x (yeah, I got behind on updates). Swap kernels, there it is again, go back to 7 and it times out on boot. Swap NVME drives and the one in this style still doesn't show up. Shows up fine in Windows - actually it's the boot drive. So I don't need it in linux, just weird. No clue why, but thought I'd throw it out there in case anyone else has one not show up.

That said I like this style, retained by the socket so handy if you're swapping drives, stays nice and cool. Bit fiddly to assemble, nothing special, just watch those tiny screws.

Last time I checked, it seems you need extra hardware to do this including dumping BIOS for backup / restore?

I didn't have to use a flash programmer to do the rebar mod. It helped that my old ivy bridge gigabyte motherboard has dual bios, so I could always fall back in case I blew something up. Intel doesn't release their flash programming software publicly, so you'll have to make the determination whether you trust any software you download. For rebar, I had to modify the bios of course. For simply booting an nvme drive on an old system, I'd probably go with the clover installation on a really old USB drive.
