Personally, I recommend a laser printer for any volume of printing. With my previous habits of printing a few pages every 2-3 months on an inkjet, I used orders if magnitude more ink on "maintenance cycles" compared to what actually ended up on the page. I tossed the printer because the heads clogged.

So, decide what it is you want to print, how much printing you do, and how much you want to spend up front and in the case of laser printers, how much are EACH of the 4 color toner cartridges (which, like I said, are usually chip-locked to make you buy the brand name toner).
It's also not hard to just print one test page a week to keep your inkjet free from clogs. Tank inkjets are, by far, the least expensive way to go for the home or home office user IMO.
