FWIW this spent most of 2025 in the $200s before jumping in March 2026 to $550-600 and hovering there for the last 5 months, according to CCC.

Thanks! I guess the question is though, how big of a downgrade is it actually in real life usage? Is it noticeably slower in playing games, to where it can't load textures? Is it a 5% slower difference or 50%?

You should be fine. Dram cache is more for long sustained writes. This is fast drive. I installed just the 990 version of the drive and it was fast on a pc.

Honestly glad I already have 2 TB gen 4 drives and a 1 TB. All NVme. A crucial T500 and 2 WD Black.Can't imagine paying this much.

I thought maybe it was a pricing mistake meant for the 2TB version. Amazon has had that one for $309 in the recent past so it's possible the $315 was meant for the 2TB not the 4TB.

Benchmarks show having HMB enabled increased IOPS over 100% vs disabled, so with the PS5 not supporting HMB, load times would suffer vs a DRAM drive. How much so would depend on the game.

That being said, the EVO Plus was rated #3 by IGN as the best drive upgrades for a PS5, since the PS5 can't match the drives rated performance anyways.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Samsung 990 Evo Plus is a DRAM-less SSD, which means lower peak performance in pro workloads. However, while it does mean this drive has lower peak performance than it would with a dedicated DRAM cache built-in, the PS5 can't take advantage of its full rated speed anyways, so it really doesn't matter. What does matter, though, is Samsung doesn't currently sell the Samsung 990 Evo Plus with a heatsink attached, which means you're going to need to pair it with one of your own. Luckily, SSD heatsinks are generally just a few bucks on Amazon, and you could probably get away without one, too.

Be careful! Several reports on reddit people are receiving the same makeup kit with 4tb labels on them, definitely recording myself opening and returning if this happens to me, mine arrives this afternoon will see.
