They tighten all around. I really like these shorts as well. Just to note the 9" have zippered side pockets, but the 7" have regular side pockets and a zip pocket on the right hip. For me at least, it is a really good phone pocket. It doesn't swing at all and doesn't push up tightly against you either.

I had the opposite experience. I usually get XXL shorts and can sometimes get away with XL but I need to send back the XXLs from the last deal and ordered XXXL today. Fingers crossed they fit.

I think they accidentally gave you a different model version. All my gradual shorts that were supposed to have zipper siide pockets came exactly as described. I also purchased the other model with no zipper pockets and I got that as well. They have so many various models that look so similar. Here are 2 models that don't have any side zipper pockets.

7" inseam is fine for 5'8". I only order 5" and 7" inseam shorts. I think the 9" inseam shorts are more suited for taller people or ok for playing basketball.

these are shilled by SD a lot, but in this case they're legitimately good shorts. I needed some cheap shorts to run around in that weren't the walmart and1 brand.. these fit the bill. They are lightweight and comfortable, I prefer the 9" inseam and they come to just above the knee for me. zippered pockets, and they are comfortable, they're my new go-to shorts. Nothing but positive things to say about them. I love the zippered pockets so I don't lose things (cash/wallet etc) These are an easy 5/5 for me. The camo ones are my favorites, I wear them almost daily and so far no issues.
