Has anyone here gone from a belt-driven wheel like this to direct drive? I'm curious how big the difference actually feels in real use. I mostly see people saying "just save for DD," but at $399 this seems like it could still be a solid option for someone who isn't trying to build a $1,500 sim rig.

I've had two different thrustmaster models (but not this pro model), two different logitech models, all being belt driven. I now have a moza R3 - their base level model. It's so much better. You can get the R3 bundle for $280usd right now. Or, get the next level up, R5, for $380usd, which is less than this model on sale. Mount it to the table for a while and then upgrade with a $400-500 aluminum 4080 profile rig from amazon. I found a used car seat from an Audi for $40 and mounted that (and spent $30 on a power supply to make the power seat adjustments work). That's $1k to build the "rig" - sans electronics like gaming pc and monitor.

DD is a huge difference, seriously. You can get a Moza R5 bundle to start for a similar price (https://us.mozaracing.com/product...ing-bundle) and its vastly superior to any belt wheel. I had the R5 bundle as my starter wheel, fantastic cheap setup.

Just do a bit of research, if you plan on playing PC it's awesome for the price. If you're like me and mostly PS racer, I had to get adapters and not all the buttons worked because of this. Still a good wheel, but not ideal for my situation. So I upgraded to Logitech RS50 maybe 6 months ago, more powerful DD but most importantly I can use all the stuff on the wheel for racing.

Best of luck, happy to help if you have any other questions.

Appreciate the detailed breakdown. I honestly hadn't looked at the Moza bundles because I assumed they were still way more expensive. Sounds like direct drive has gotten a lot more affordable than I realized. I may have to do some more research before pulling the trigger on anything.

Thanks for the info. I'm mostly on PC, so compatibility shouldn't be much of an issue. Sounds like the R5 is the one I should be comparing against instead of this. I'll definitely do some more digging before deciding. Appreciate the offer to answer questions.

I use one of these, they were Thrustmasters best effort in the days when DD were still $1000+. Today, at $400 its a solid, established ecosystem with lots of 2nd hand replacement wheel options, but it's yesterdays technology. Upsides? 6nm of force, enough to spin my Wheel Stand Pro (heavy steel tubing) if I am aggressively fighting the wheel at max-force (which is why I run 75% torque on PC). Also has compatibility with Xbox which may help with resale value if you want to go with something else in the future. The wheel this one comes with (Sparco) is substantial, feels like metal, good size and heft.

The pedals that come with this are plastic, entry level, rubber stopper on the brake, not springs that can be adjusted but functional.

Still everything everyone is saying about DD wheels is true, but right now Moza is really the affordable option...its not like there is a vast competition of well-reviewed DD wheels and pedal combos in the $300-$400 range last time I checked. Thrustmaster is like $500+ and I hear they have some 'issues' which is why they are that price, Logitech I don't think comes into play until you hit like $600 or more....
