I've had two different thrustmaster models (but not this pro model), two different logitech models, all being belt driven. I now have a moza R3 - their base level model. It's so much better. You can get the R3 bundle for $280usd right now. Or, get the next level up, R5, for $380usd, which is less than this model on sale. Mount it to the table for a while and then upgrade with a $400-500 aluminum 4080 profile rig from amazon. I found a used car seat from an Audi for $40 and mounted that (and spent $30 on a power supply to make the power seat adjustments work). That's $1k to build the "rig" - sans electronics like gaming pc and monitor.

Has anyone here gone from a belt-driven wheel like this to direct drive? I'm curious how big the difference actually feels in real use. I mostly see people saying "just save for DD," but at $399 this seems like it could still be a solid option for someone who isn't trying to build a $1,500 sim rig.

DD is a huge difference, seriously. You can get a Moza R5 bundle to start for a similar price (https://us.mozaracing.com/product...ing-bundle) and its vastly superior to any belt wheel. I had the R5 bundle as my starter wheel, fantastic cheap setup.

Just do a bit of research, if you plan on playing PC it's awesome for the price. If you're like me and mostly PS racer, I had to get adapters and not all the buttons worked because of this. Still a good wheel, but not ideal for my situation. So I upgraded to Logitech RS50 maybe 6 months ago, more powerful DD but most importantly I can use all the stuff on the wheel for racing.
