Total Wireless's $20 BYOD plan stands out for unlimited priority data on Verizon, unlimited hotspot at 5 Mbps, and international roaming that includes 10 GB plus calling to many countries. The deal also carries a 5 year price lock on the base rate, with taxes and fees included, and some accounts can stack rewards or home internet discounts. The main catches are that new customers usually need to port in from another carrier, the first month can bill at $30, and the promo price depends on autopay and eligibility. Customer service and porting problems are the biggest recurring concern, so it fits best if you want low monthly cost and can tolerate some setup friction.

  • Single-line Verizon-network shoppers who want unlimited priority data, because the plan has strong speeds and coverage with 5G UW plus unlimited hotspot.

  • Frequent international travelers who want roaming built in, because the plan includes roaming data and broad country coverage without buying a separate eSIM.

  • People who want a long-term phone bill they can set and forget, because the price is advertised with a five-year lock on an eligible BYOD line.

  • Households adding a tablet line, because the plan can bundle a tablet add-on for a low monthly extra charge.

There's an obvious discrepancy here.. It shows $20/mo for new customers, but the plan is actually $30 and their autopay discount is only $5/mo so no idea how they go from 25 -> 20 and how long that extra discount will last, if at all
its $5 promo and $5 auto pay. unenrolling and enrolling autopay fixes the amount to $20

My daughter is using a Straight Talk iphone 16e (which is a sister company to Total) and Total says they won't activate the phone with the promo. Does anyone know if I could activate the promo on a different phone and then transfer? IPhone 16e does not have a physical SIM slot so I need Total to activate the phone for me...

Straight Talk is Verizon-owned, so its branded phones are automatically excluded from Total's $20 BYOD promo. You could activate on another qualifying phone, but moving the line to the ST iPhone 16e would disqualify the promo and revert you to regular pricing.

Argh - I'm on grandfathered $60 for 2 lines with 30GB shared data and hotspot enabled. No international roaming at all.

This would be great plan for me and wife to switch to, but, from the earlier discussion, looks like I'll have to port out and back in to qualify for this plan.

much better. that one is $10 more and one level lower priority
Just to clarify, that is incorrect at least with respect to the current plans that Visible sells (may be correct on some legacy plans). Only the base ($25) plan on Visible has QCI9 priority. The other two Visible monthly plans ($30/$40 after Inner Circle discount, ignoring current promotions) have the same priority as Total (QCI8).

Also worth mentioning that the top level Visible plan is only $18.75 a month right now if you pay annually (link to SD thread). Comparing that plan to Total, you get faster hotspot at 15mbps (5mbps on Total) and a watch plan included. Customer service should also be better on Visible if you run into an issue & no restriction on which phones you can use on that plan (i.e., unlocked Total/Straight Talk phones are fine).

On the other hand, Total theoretically has a 5 year price guarantee, so that's an advantage of Total vs. Visible.

I have 3 people in my family on this exact same plan, except I am paying the $30/per line. We are also getting an $5 discount on one line for doing the autopay. So basically $85/month. When I saw this I reached out and asked if I could get the lower price. They said no, I am already on the plan. I am now thinking about using something like numberbarn to port out my numbers and then signing up for this plan again and port my numbers back in to get the discount. Has anyone ever done that before? Do they flag your phone number to prevent stuff like this. It is kind of irritating they just won't get it to me, but for 3 lines ($30/month savings) It might be worth it.

This is what I am thinking about doing. Did you do this? My only concern is they might flag me when I try to come back and just give me my old plan back.

Phenomenal promo considering unlimited hotspot and international roaming (including Mexico, Canada, Europe, and Asia).
Exactly..promo is unsustainable. Tmobil did this type of outlandish promotions right before getting in the merger with Sprint. Once they did all the promos went away.
I have a feeling this deal is just a fast way to boost customer numbers for w higher company valuation
Now days, your number is your life line. From doctor to opening your garage remotely you depend on that number. Im not willing to risk it

No. New accounts only. You have to port out and back in.
If you already have a plan with them and you port out, will they disqualify you from the promo when trying to port back in? This is what I was going to do, but I am concerned they might not give it to me.

They told me I have to port in from a carrier to get the $20 deal. I used Google voice and it only showed $25 after autopay .
So you didn't get it when you tried to port back in?

No... not yet. I've not ported out our two numbers in the past 7 years and now feeling a bit cold feet about moving out, worried that something might go wrong with it.

Hi folks.. Given that this $20 BYO plan is a "Limited time offer" (and their website gives no additional details, neither did CS), would it be wise to wait to port over? Historically, do these promos last long? does anyone know how long this one might last?

FYI when you go onto their website it clearly states

On the Total MAX 5G BYO Plan with Auto Pay. First month $30, then $20/mo after.

So be warned that you're paying $30 for the first month.
