Total Wireless's $20 BYOD plan stands out for unlimited priority data on Verizon, unlimited hotspot at 5 Mbps, and international roaming that includes 10 GB plus calling to many countries. The deal also carries a 5 year price lock on the base rate, with taxes and fees included, and some accounts can stack rewards or home internet discounts. The main catches are that new customers usually need to port in from another carrier, the first month can bill at $30, and the promo price depends on autopay and eligibility. Customer service and porting problems are the biggest recurring concern, so it fits best if you want low monthly cost and can tolerate some setup friction.

Common Questions (5)

  • The first month is $30, then it drops to $20 per month with Auto Pay. The checkout can show $55 until the promo and Auto Pay discount fully apply, so the lower price may not appear immediately.

  • Yes. The plan includes unlimited hotspot capped at 5 Mbps, plus international roaming with 10 GB of data and calling coverage to 200+ countries. It also includes 5G UW and is often described as a strong option for frequent travelers.

  • The 5-year guarantee applies to the qualifying plan and base price, not necessarily to every promotional discount shown at checkout. Auto Pay and BYOD requirements must stay active, and the phone itself does not have to stay the same device for the full term.

  • Yes, Total Wireless can activate eSIM on compatible phones. Several signups completed with eSIM QR activation, and switching phones with a physical SIM can be immediate with no billing change.

  • Yes. The $20 BYOD promo is for new customers who port in from another carrier; Google Voice and existing Total/Total by Verizon lines do not qualify. Total Wireless also treats a new customer as someone who has not activated Total service in the last 90 days.

Is this dead? I click though the deal, enter my IMEI and current Verizon Prepaid acct and PIN, then create a TW account and it only shows me 3 plans ranging from $35-60 . The middle one for $55/month is the 5G Max, but not seeing $20 Frown

Deal should still be active.. I had some onboarding issues as well. Talk to their customer service chat and let them know you're a BYOD new customer and that the $20 promo should be available for the account you just created

I switched from Visible to Total Wireless on their $25 dollar plan.

I had no problems except when I wanted to add a second line. If you want a second line, you have to pay the regular 50something for the first and then I believe 30 for the additional line. Of course customer service said I could add a second line for 30 bucks while on the 25 dollar plan, but after buying the phone and after trying to activate, they informed me that they would have to "upgrade" my plan to the 50something + $30 for the second line. Thankfully the phone I got from them was able to be used on Tracfone on an existing line I have with them so it was not a total loss.

HOWEVER, if you just want one line - they seem great. Hotspot worked during a recent internet outage to stream on one TV (would not do two). One thing I really like about Total Wireless is the NXTPAPER 10 Tablet the can be added to the 25 dollar plan for 10 bucks a month (I think I had to sign up for the 20 dollar plan when getting a discount on the device, but it let me change it to the 10 dollar plan for the following month). So the long and short of it is that I got a phone and tablet plan for a grand total of $35 bucks combined, which beats anyone else if you are in the market for a tablet.
I've tried to port out of Visible to Total Wireless and it's been a disaster. I ended up cancelling it because their porting people say the account is wrong. I gave them the exact account number and PIN from Visible and they keep saying its invalid. Did you drop the leading zeros?

I believe I had to contact visible for my account number and port out pin if I remember correctly, as to what I did with the numbers, I do not remember.

Totally lame though - porting out can sometimes be a nightmare...Sorry I could not be of more help.

So, I went through the entire sign up thing with an unlocked Tracfone Motorola phone, using the phone's esim; I signed up with my Chase credit card for autopay so $30 for the first month - $15 credit from Chase - after that $20 a month.

I tried several things/times and authorization didn't complete. I called Total Wireless and they told me my phone is set up but there is some snafu at the office and some engineering nerd type admin will call me after 24 hours to ... I'm not sure what.

Not exactly what I wanted to hear.

EDIT: My phone is connected and working. I've no idea what they did but it seems to be OK.

But all the negative comments make me wonder. Of course, people said much the same about Tracfone for years. Which happens to be the carrier on my other phone. Both are Verizon knock-offs.

I read the fine print. The 5 year price guarantee is for the full price ($30), not for the discounted price ($20).
I asked Total Wireless's AI chat bot about this. Its reply:

Here are the key details regarding the 5-year price guarantee:

Price Lock Guarantee: The 5-year price guarantee locks in your promotional monthly rate for a full 5 years as long as you remain active on an eligible plan and maintain all promotional requirements (such as AutoPay and Bring Your Own Phone terms).
Promotional Rate: For eligible Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP) single-line promotions, the guaranteed rate applies to your promotional monthly cost (such as $20/mo on eligible promotional tiers).
Plan Requirements: The guarantee remains valid as long as your line stays active on the qualifying plan without unauthorized plan changes or lapses in service.

However, after reading more of the negative comments - they remind me of the days when I had a Net10 phone - I'm wary.

I wondered the same. I haven't read the terms word for word. I tried to start a chat but that, apparently, is over my head.

However, I cannot imagine you have to keep the same phone for 5 years. What if your phone is stolen or lost? Or if it just craps out? Of course, this is the kind of thing to settle ahead of time. Which I didn't do.

FYI if Frontier/Verizon is your Internet provider, you might qualify for a $15 discount on your Internet bill if you also are a Total Wireless subscriber - also might apply to other Verizon-related MVNOs or whatever they're called. I got an email today re: my bill due in mid October - and it's $15 less than last month.

PS - I found this on the Total Wireless site re: the bring-your-own-phone plan. "BYO requires a compatible, unlocked device and SIM. Check compatibility at totalwireless.com/activate.byop.landing.serviceprovider."

OK - I went back and asked their AI chatbot this question. Caution: They specify that AI makes mistakes so verify information. But this sounds fairly solid. Here is the interaction:

"So, someone asked me this. And I want to make sure I understand. They asked if I have to keep the same phone that I use now on the $20 BYOP plan for the entire 5-year period. I said I could not imagine that's the case - because phones are lost, damaged, stolen all the time. Can you confirm?"

Total Wireless AI:
I am happy to clarify how the 5-year price guarantee works on your plan.

The 5-year price guarantee applies to your qualifying plan and line of service, not to a specific physical device.
You are not required to keep the exact same phone for the entire 5-year period.
If your phone is lost, damaged, or upgraded, you can switch to another compatible device on your line while maintaining your plan.
To keep your promotional pricing, you must maintain continuous active service on your qualifying plan with Auto Pay enabled.

Hope this helps.

I had a similar experience, but from Tracfone to Metro-by-T Mobile. Turns out I gave a wrong zip code. When I signed up Tracfone, I opted for a new number and used a zip code of my choice, but not of my billing address. That zip is called SERVICE ZIP CODE and recorded by Tracfone in their system.

Even though later I added addresses in my Tracfone online profile, for both billing and shipping. Because my billing and shipping address is NOT at the SERVICE ZIP CODE; at the time of port out, I gave my BILLING ZIP but not TRACFONE'S SERVICE ZIP CODE. Hence a failed port.

So be very careful with your name, address, zip, etc at the time of signing up any MVNOs, and remember them for potential port-out. Hope that helps.

BTW, for this deal, I ended up with getting a new number directly from TW at the BYOD rate. Everything is still kicking for now. Been a 15 days or so. Will report when it renews for the second month.

I was never able to get the port to work and TW said they would refund my $30 but didn't. I contacted them multiple times and then they said "just file a dispute with your bank for it." Like huh? That just costs them more money then actually processing a refund. This is the 2nd bad experience I've had with TW so I won't be trying them again ever.

By the way, the deal continued past 9/30 despite the rumors.
