I've bought various brands, the foam works fine, but the firmness/height varies a lot once expanded between brands. No weird smells from my experience
for me specifically, they've all been slightly thinner than what I prefer. I sacrificed one pillow and transferred some foam into 2 or 3 other pillows to get my preferred height. no problems after that
