How does Snapdragon X Elite compare with Intel/AMD CPUs? I have been eying this one https://www.costco.com/dell-16-to...72292.html, but it only has 16GB mem and is also inspiron and this deal is XPS. I am looking for a laptop for my kid who is going to high school this fall.Thanks.

Great question, and one that I've been wrestling with for a while. I've been eyeing the OP's exact configuration for a while, but I just picked up a BestBuy open-box, different version of this same model (XPS 9345) for ~650. It's only got 16GB (my biggest problem with it), and it's got the 3k OLED touchscreen. With my 60-day return policy I plan to put it through it's paces to see if I can live with 16gb (skeptical, but it's a travel-companion device that may be OK), if I want the OLED at the expense of battery life (which is still supposed to be outstanding), and if I like or despise the keyboard (it's divisive). I'll know more in a week or so - unfortunately long after this deal is gone.

The ARM vs Intel/AMD question is another whole can of worms - and the answer is HIGHLY subjective. If you use apps that have native ARM versions, it can be AMAZING - with comparable speed but greatly improved battery live, thermals, and noise. IF you require and regularly use apps that need to run under emulation, you'll miss out on battery gains (but still end up comparable to Intel/AMD alternatives). IF you use apps/devices that are somehow still unsupported (like games that require x86/x64 anti-cheat code), it would be a bad idea.

For a student, focused on school work - with possible media consumption and simple or web-based games, the weight (this XPS is amazingly compact) and longer-than-a-school-day battery life (with this non-touch IPS display being the best option - very likely getting over 20 hours) would likely be amazing. The Inspiron, with older Intel chip and 16" display are a completely different beast. Not necessarily bad (possibly better when used plugged in on a desk), but not as easy/ideal to carry around.

Not that I want (or am ready) to plug this, but this exact question has inspired me to re-visit my programming (what the young'uns would call "coding") roots. I've written (and am currently testing/troubleshooting) a [completely free] compatibility scanner and recommendation engine for anyone considering making the switch to ARM. If you (or anyone else) would like to give it a go, just PM me and I'll give you the link. Just understand it's still in dev - but looking very promising after early feedback.

If I'm still running into compatibility issues with certain applications on AMD processors, I'd expect even more trouble on ARM. The compatibility between ARM and x86 is what's holding me back right now. You may encounter additional issues with school applications designed for Windows, since they're typically built exclusively for x86 processors.

Agreed. Had an X1E-78-100 Acer Swift SF-14T and nonstop issues not only with emulated apps ranging from simple ones like VPNs to games. Notwithstanding app compatibility, there may also be various driver issues and core functionalities affected. For instance, my WiFi would crap out every couple of hours and required a full restart to get working again. Now could this have been limited to my device only? Probably, but it's like opening a can of worms at this point. I would much rather find an x86 computer at this price point, and battery on those is great as well as long as you don't buy the 8-core+ models. Something like the U series from intel or Ryzen AI chips are great.

Again, this can either be an amazing option, or a horrible one. Too everyone who makes polar, binary claims about it being either or, with no qualification, you're not helping. I know, some people just love to stir things up, but it's just making more nonsensical noise.

IF you understand your workload, and know the apps and devices you count on are supported, these newer ARM-powered laptops can be amazing. IF you know they aren't you should run away (for now).

I'm NOT trying to convince anyone that ARM is better or worse than anything else, and neither should anyone else. I will happily upvote any response that gives an explanation/reason for the positive or negative experience. For someone with similar needs, that is very helpful.

Outside of the merits of ARM, the XPS line has always been "impressive" in much of its design and styling. The laptop in the OP is definitely very cool, and I'm loving mine so far, but I jumped in with a confident understanding of my use case. I'm still unsure about the keyboard decisions (look it up), but it definitely feels "premium" and is exceeding my expectations so far.

Correct. There's a second generation (Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2) hitting the market now, which is likely why you'll see prices on these falling. As always, if the X1 meets your needs you can catch great deals. If you're need isn't urgent, or you have the disposable income, wait a few months.

Not only is the second generation much more powerful (both raw processing and graphics), but Nvidia has announced that they are officially entering the ring as well (Qualcomm doesn't own ARM) - and major manufacturers have announced plans to use their chips as well. If/when this happens, you'll likely see an major improvement in ARM support from the software vendor side.

Never any guarantees, and not a reason to buy now - especially if you need apps that require or are just much better on x86/x64.

Yeah, I am waiting for NVIDIA's variant. Otherwise, i will go with X2 Elite Extreme (Asus Zenbook A16) with 48GB RAM.

Snapdragon turns this into a super chrome book, don't buy this if you plan on using it for work or if whatever software you typically install only supports x64 or x86.

The situtation has been improved a lot and for most general purpose workloads, it works perfectly. And, duing the release of the 2nd Gen Snapdragon X2 Series, Qualcomm and Nvidia worked a lot to improve the performance of the Prism Translation layer which is not just valod for X2 series, X1 series gets the exact same compatibility and performance upgrade while running x86 or x64 apps through translation layer.

First, Chromebooks can be outstanding for those who "work" (or attend school) somewhere that is heavily into the Google ecosystem (I know at least a couple). If your required workflow leverages entirely either Google or other web-based content, the cost and other possible benefits make Chromebooks a viable option - not the derogatory "insult" so many people imply. I can't use one myself, but I sometimes envy people who can get away with one.

Second, you essentially admit the problem with the "if whatever software you typically install only supports x64 or x86" line. This is the tough part, as many people have no idea whether their apps have ARM64 versions or alternatives, or what that even means.

It's blanket statements like this that add more confusion than they help. It's fine to say "it doesn't work for me - since I do a lot of CAD work with an app that requires massive x64 computation power", but "don't buy this if you plan on using it for work" only works for those who are in the same line of work as you, and use the same tech/software stack.

The sad thing is that I think you were trying to be helpful (not just flame), but without qualification it's not.

it is pathetic that major brands would even install snapdragon knowing these limitations. we are buying a computer, not a toy smartphone

Never purchasing an XPS 13 again.. my last one was a 9315. It was the worst laptop I've ever had - worse than the cheap ones while being a premium $1000 machine.
