The TI-84 Evo is a school-focused graphing calculator that keeps the familiar TI-84 layout while adding USB-C charging and a few useful math upgrades. The interface stays consistent with older TI calculators, which helps in classrooms, and the degree and radian handling, fraction display, and easy decimal toggle are practical touches. It also preserves the tactile keypad that beats typing on a phone or tablet. The main drawbacks are a slow interface, weak battery life, slow charging, and a display and print format that feel dated. A solid fit when school compatibility matters more than modern polish.

I picked one up during the woot sale. I was a bit hesitant because it does not add much. My kid REALLY likes it over the 84+ ce python. The best feature is it is USBC. So you no longer need a special cable to charge. Other improvements are... you can keep it in radians mode but enter an angle in degrees and it will convert bit for you. If a solution is a rational number, it will show the fraction and allow you to easily toggle between it and the decimal solution.

I have my old TI-86 from high school, more advanced than this TI-84, but now discontinued. I'm now passing it on to my kid starting high school!

Use the phone app.
Many schools ban phones. College entrance exams and standardized tests also do not allow phones.

My kids used Calc84 on android phone and tablet. Was much faster and visually appealing with same key layout and function. When in classroom would use ti-84's that belonged to the school for testing.

I have my TI 82 from 30 years ago but my son's teacher said no, must be Ti 84. Why does an 8th grader need these calculators anyways, overkill in my opinion.

Yeah I get its purpose but its price is insane considering the phone in your pocket can do a very considerable amount more.
that and there has to be 800 million of them used on the internet for 15$

Uniformity of interface makes teaching easier. Having to learn the button combos for multiple models is a pain.

Worth upgrading from the TI-84 Plus CE? Or would this be a downgrade?

weird tech niche TI found themselves in. It's for schoolkids and you dont want the calculator to become so advanced it can solve the problem just by looking at it. the kids are supposed to figure out how to solve, so having a tech device with limited power they dont have to change it to fill the need. there's no need to evolve it
Found themselves in? They begged, borrowed, pleaded, cheated, bribed and stole themselves in. It's very much on purpose and very much so they can keep selling these things for a huge profit. This thing should be $50 retail at most.

I still have my TI-86 from 1996. In great shape minus the 💩 job engraving I did of my name on the back and on the cover.
