Most players will play their entire lives, some decent, and never really understand. So it's not a must right now. That said, squires are very good too. If you have his teacher take an off the shelf squire, whether it's a $200 bullet, or a $400 classic vibe, you'll put exactly what he needs in his hands. Of course Gibson has copies made by epiphone but I wouldn't recommend even messing with a Les Paul style guitar. You can get a Gibson Les paul standard for a steal, but scale length, nut width, neck, profile, and controls, put most players who beginning at a disadvantage with any other guitar. By the way, there are other guitar manufacturers out there, but you're wasting your time. Sure there are some decent guitars out there, but fender Strats and squire Strats accomplish what you're trying to get done with the least amount shopping the rest, often more than half of them being complete crap or incompatible, and could slow your child's progress. I love plenty of Music Man, Gibson, Jackson, Ibanez, Yamaha, EVH, ESP, etc. guitars and sometimes their Indonesian sourced factory models are OK, but there's no reason shopping them when it takes time away from your overall goal. As well, you're going to see plenty of people that post garbage on the Internet like INDIO guitars, claiming that they're awesome. They may make a decent model here and there, but I wouldn't even call these guitars, it's just a money grab with people seemingly doing guitar reviews, but in reality they're getting paid by clicks or by manufacturers to sell junk to unsuspecting people. True, Zakk Wylde can make a $50 guitar sound like a $700 guitar but being a professional is a whole different thing.
