I currently have aluminum stuff and it's held up pretty good. I think I remember it as being the better option. Am I remembering correctly? Is this iron and/or steel stuff something to avoid?

Correct, with the iron stuff water gets under the coating eventually and rusts. The aluminum ones will last forever.
