The Daiwa QR is a compact ultralight reel that stands out for ice fishing and light freshwater setups, with a larger spool than many UL reels that helps reduce line memory, twist, and slow pickup. It also folds down easily for storage, and the QR750 specs list 3 plus 1 bearings, a 5.1 to 1 gear ratio, and a 7 pound drag. The main knocks are a stiff bail close and limited appeal at this price compared with other reel deals.

Penn was a better deal for reels, as far as rods I go with ugly stik, west marine has a 20% sale ending today, if you need substantial amount of gear. Make sure to get the rod with no inserts on the rings. Other than that I wouldn't buy this at this price point. They had 2500 Penn battle 4 79.99$ 2 weeks ago at west marine, I'd take that any day over this.
Penn battle reels are built like tanks -- solid, long-lasting, but VERY heavy -- and because of this, its smaller-sized and larger-sized models are not my personal favorite. The 2500 size is difficult to match a ML/M-weight rod without losing the balance due to the weight (you'll have to intentionally find a tip-heavy rod to balance it), whereas their 6000-and-above sizes significantly lose their castability due to weight, too. In addition, as a few others have committed, battle 2500 is not a UL or L reel, M - debatable for inshore, ML - probably.

Anyone use these for ice fishing? Would like to start this year.
This is an excellent ice fishing reel. Its about the same size of many other UL / ice reels, but offers a considerably larger spool that mitigates many issues with a smaller spool -- line memory/twist, slow line pickup, etc.

Sure, but this reel is heavily used for ice fishing. I aint putting any 2500 penn battle on a 30" light action ice rod 😂

Any suggestions on a good affordable ul rod to pair this with?

So many reels these days seem to share the same design, they look relatively the same in terms of the body. What's up with that, are they basically the same design inside?

One thing I don't like is how much handle turning pressure is needed to close the bail on some of these. My old circa 1970s Mitchell reels are still working, and the bails close so much easier.

Local dicks had a display model. Skip this one. Could probably go even cheaper for ice fishing.

The recommendation has always been to close the bail manually.
