Eek. You can find better machines used on eBay if your patient and know what models to look for, for half this price all day.
Any of you guys look at the refurbished Acer from a week ago? Price increased by like $10 to $410 instead of $400 and slickdeals shows deal is dead, but still available on ebay. Curious if anyone better informed can argue what's wrong with that one as "16gb under $500" (besides just being manufacturer refurbished). Got one of those for aging parents and the battery showed new with 2 cycles.

Breath in... breath out... this is my two cents. I'm not saying all Acer products are bad. But man, I've come across so many acer laptops in the last 5 years that never made it past 2-3 years because of cheap plastic hinges breaking off just as one example. They tend to be very plasticy and flimsy and they cut corners in places that would make them hard to live with day to day. So personally I am a big fan of HP Elitebook or HP Probook, of the G7 or newer series. Preferably G8, G9, G10 or newer if you can get a good deal, they have some nice 16:10 resolution laptops that are really nice. Also Dell latitude can be nice depending on the model. And recently I've been learning about the Lenovo thinkpad x13 yoga models, those seem super nice too. These machines tend to be made of aluminum or magnesium, they are solid, designed to take a beating and they tend to have really high quality screens, keyboard and mouse pad usually are exceptional on these. It just kinda comes down to, do you want a touch screen? Large screen? More compact and portable? Something with gpu performance or more storage etc. and all those systems have model segments for the difference size screens of course. But that's what I would say, do some research on those, because those are designed to take a beating and keep working for 10 years where as Acer was barely designed to last a couple years new let alone as a refurbished model.

This is the first 16gb anything I've seen for less than 550 for months.

At this price, if you want 512GB SSD or higher you're going to have to settle for 8GB RAM.
