I have this. It takes a minute to heat up, then it runs the fan for a minute to cool down. 90% of the battery is used up this way. It also doesn't have an adapter for a narrow blow path for heat shrink and other small tasks. I prefer a little $20 heat gun and only pull this one out once a year if I'm doing something away from an outlet.

To start, I really like this too, less heat than plug in but I like the convenience.
Yours sounds like a defective one, mine heats up in several seconds and there is no "fan only" mode to cool it off, although this would be desired as the fan uses little battery compared to heating and preserves the heating element. I have no issue doing heat shrink or tasks that need more heat, mine came with two accessories. Heating takes a lot of electricity, so don't use it with 2.0ah or smaller batteries. I'd honestly suggest calling DeWalt and telling them it won't heat.
