Trick is to go back and forth every year between cheap annual offers, some work involved with the porting and what not, but definitely worth the savings.
My personal take is, I only try to do the 12 month offers. getting a $10-15 a month for 3 months deal may be nice, but to keep dealing with port in and port outs and glitches that can arise from starting a new carrier more than 1x a year is something I have no interest in messing with.
I am currently on MINT, my year cell plan ends in early December, so I too will be shopping around then for a deal if mint won't renew me at $180 for the year. But I have no complaints about their service, been very reliable and solid whereever I've used the phone.
Community Reviews
Mint Mobile's 12 month unlimited plan stands out for low annual pricing on the T Mobile network, with solid service and decent 5G coverage in many areas. The comments also point to smooth porting in some cases, helpful online chat for account and PIN details, and occasional renewal discounts that can drop the effective monthly cost further. The main cautions are deprioritization in crowded cities, extra taxes and fees, and a 50 GB slowdown on unlimited. Porting out can take extra steps, and activation or support problems have also been reported, so it fits best when coverage is strong and the savings matter most.
Common Questions (5)
Mint can be fast and reliable in many areas, but it is deprioritized on T-Mobile's network, so speeds can drop in crowded places, stadiums, and other congested spots. In less congested or rural areas, users report solid service and good 5G coverage.
Port-out info can be obtained through online chat in under five minutes, but some accounts require calling to cancel because the account number or transfer PIN is not shown online. A few users also report Mint makes porting out more difficult than expected.
Yes, some existing customers have renewed for another 12 months at $180, and one renewal even showed a manual discount that ended up around $140-something before taxes. Others were offered a different retention price, such as 17GB for $180, so the renewal offer can vary.
Mint's unlimited plan is not hard-capped, but after 50GB it can be deprioritized and slow down sharply during congestion. That means it can still work fine for heavy use in uncongested areas, but speeds may drop to very low levels in busy places.
No. The advertised $180 price does not include taxes and fees, and the final bill can run about $5 to $6 more per line per month in California, putting a $15 plan closer to $20 and a $20 plan closer to $25.

I have Google fi now but my promo is running out so wondering if 5G SA will mitigate any of the previous issues I had.

MINT RENEWALS
1st line, 2 years. Got the 5gb/12m for $180. Did not remember to turn off auto renewal and got 6gb/12m for NOT 180 (forgot how much). Renewal around April. Will try to get better rates at year 2.
2nd line, 2 years. First year was Unlimited data for 12m/$180. Again forgot to turn off auto renewal, opened up a chat box to ask for forgiveness and was offered a 17gb plan for 12m/$180 (I just looked at the account - categorized as "CARE2: Retention Offer". I was expecting to cancel and go elsewhere b/c the website didn't have any specials going on at the time. I was fortunate. Renewal in August. On this year's renewal, I asked for a customer retention offer and I was told there was none, but here is your acct/pin number.
So, it's possible a renewal bargain is subject to what the CSR can offer to us. I'm switching line 2 to USMobile to try out. USM seems to have better rates if you don't need Unlimited data. They even have a "Lite" plan with unlimited text/min + 2gb data. You add 2gb data on any plan for $2. Plus you can get data for all smart watches (but only for Samsung Galaxy 9 & up) for $6.50/m for a prepaid year.
TAXES/SURCHARGES
Adding onto a previous post - Mint & Google FI both add fees to the plans advertised. Red Pocket and US Mobile have it already incorparated into the plans advertised. USM&Fi make that clear as day on its websites. I think I was shocked at the +22 at Mint after payment. I have bought all my RP plans on the Ebay store, so there wasn't any additional cost.
MINT RELIABILITY
In my area, I would keep Mint forever if I could get 6gb@15/m. Zero problems. 10 stars. [I just checked my account. Like others mentioned before, the new 5gb plan is 6gb AND is normally 15/m for 1yr (this was the special deal 2yrs ago). I didn't know that. But since we are close to BF, I'm going to extend 3m and see what offers are out there!]
DE-PRIORITIZATION on MVNOs
From my google search education: The lower the QCI, the higher priority you have on the network. In high congestion times, higher numbers get choked. In low congestion, all experience equal speeds.
*All T-Mobile Mobile plans get a QCI of 7. It's the best rating out there unless you are on a premium plan offered from a MVNO. A cheap or premium plan, they should all have a QCI=7 (from my search)
*Google Fi is the exception. It has a QCI of 6. This is the equivalent of a TMo premium plan.
*Verizon backed plans range from a QCI=8 for a premium plan to a QCI=9 for standard. It's possible that some MVNOs offer all Verizon backed plans at QCI=9. I read into this that all TMo backed plans out there are better than Verizon?
*ATT backed plans range from QCI=7 (premium) to QCI=9 (cheapest). I read into this that the mid-tier is equivalent to all TMo plans out there.
So from all that, I suppose TMo backed plans might be better in congested cities? Unless the plan clearly states "the first 10gb is priority". But compared to what exactly?
For where I live, Mint is great, so I plan on keeping to TMo backed plans unless proven otherwise. I do know that RP Verizon has gotten so bad here, that it feels like I get cut to 3g speeds.
