I got some of these on a previous deal. They are truly outstanding. I use them with and without an amp and though better with an amp, they sound dang good without as well. These punch waaaaay above their price point.

So I just made a purchase based solely on the weight of all the praise from the comments. But will this thing 'just work' if I plug it into a steam deck or nintendo switch? Please tell me I don't have to buy something else to power this thing.

You wouldn't get the full dynamic range that the headphones can reproduce. Not entirely about the volume, more power/more volume isn't necessarily better. You can always add an Amp later. These are really designed to be used at a desk with a DAC+Amp setup.

This is a great deal, and a fantastic headphone. I have these and they are my current daily drivers. If you need an amp look into options such as Qudelix 5k or ifi signature. There are many others, but I have those 2 and they are great

I have a Qudelix and it runs these well. There are more powerful amps, but I like the size and software of the Qudelix. The price isn't too bad either

I like combo DAC+Amp units to reduce cable runs. Currently run a Sennheiser GSX 1000 on my work computer and Mayflower Arc Mk2 on personal computer. I quite like the Mayflower, the output is clean and has plenty of overhead for just about any headphone. The dedicated bass boost DSP function can rattle my eyeballs when I'm in the mood for it. Badseedtech on youtube has reviews of the 1st and 2nd gen. Both are great, the Mk2 can be bus powered and eliminates the need for a power adapter (again, fewer cables).

Since you asked, these headphones will play music plugged directly into your music source. The Edition XS, as well as other Hifiman headphones, don't have the most accurate frequency response, so using the equalization of the Qudelix will definitely benefit these headphones. The source of the material played and amplification are also important.
Edited to add, the big benefit of the Qudelix is its portability. If you don't need to walk around wearing your headphones, there are other options.
