Only Two Towers benefits from the Extended treatment. The other two only add "book details" that don't fit the movie (and Return of the King spoils the surprise of the Army of the Dead).

Nice comment. Back in the day you'd be crucified for preferring theatrical of any of them.I'll keep it in mind next time I watch. Two Towers extended the rest theatrical

I picked up The Hobbit trilogy (extended editions, 4K) last time Apple had this sort of promotion, so glad to do this now for the best trilogy of all time!

At this price, it's probably worth it for anyone that only has HD now.

How do I tell if I only have HD?

Hmmm.... I have the Blu-ray.... so maybe this is an upgrade in picture quality but a downgrade in sound. Thoughts?

The 4K version is just an upscale from the 2K, not a rescan from the negatives. The color grading has been improved a lot from the Blu-ray (in my opinion). But it has the downside that DNR was applied to the image. If you don't think you will notice either of those things, I'd just stick with the Blu-rays.

Check at MA. I upgrade only at less than a $3 price.

Thanks... I'll pass... maybe if there's a deal on the 4K discs then I might bite.

These are massive upgrades, thanks to the Dolby Vision color change. It's night and day from the previous versions. It's so much more vivid. Not to mention Dolby Atmos audio if you a sound system that supports that.
