The Motorola Edge 2024 stands out as a budget Android phone with strong extras, especially wired desktop mode and the ability to run as a Wi Fi only device. It also has a clear software runway, with security updates expected through May 2027 and Android 16 as the last major version. The main catches are carrier locking and unlock uncertainty, since the bootloader is said to be locked and the SIM unlock path can be tricky. Battery life and the USB C port also draw complaints over time, making this more appealing for tinkering than for long term hassle free use.

Common Questions (5)

  • The phone can reportedly be rebranded to Tracfone or Visible, but the device must be brand new out of the box and not previously activated on Straight Talk. The bootloader is not unlockable, so this is about SIM/network rebranding rather than bootloader unlocking.

    Frank_Nittymoku160Frank_NittyJaggsta

  • The 2024 model is cheaper, but newer Edge versions add improvements such as a smaller 6.3-inch screen on the 2026 model and a better camera. If you care about longer support or newer hardware, the 2025/2026 options may be the better value.

    jimx200Jaggstaiskynix

  • Yes. It can be used as a Wi‑Fi-only phone without issues, so it still works for apps, media, and desktop-mode use even without cellular service.

    behzodSpyrusNViware

  • Security updates are expected through May 2027, and Android 16 is the last major Android version for this model. That leaves roughly two more years of support, which matters if you want a longer usable life before the phone ages out.

    bostondealseekrSpyrusNViware

  • The USB-C charging port can become unreliable over time and may fail to charge overnight, and battery life can be poor even when battery health still reads around 95%. That makes long-term daily use less predictable than the spec sheet suggests.

What's the cheapest plan/path to unlock? Does using TracFone service count towards the year?

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

Pay $420 a year + $92.92 just to get the phone unlocked? I'll pass.

I have 2 of these phones. One from Total, and one from Metro. Fantastic phones. I love the wired desktop mode ability. However, according to Motorola, security updates will stop May 2027. That 6/28 date you site is for the Edge 2025. I suppose you could use the $60 365 day TracFone plan to unlock these...in a year. I think it's just too late to buy these with the software support Motorola offers. After security updates end, I plan on using them for emulation with the wired desktop mode.

Is there no aftermarket unlock, like has happened with some previous Motorola Tracfones?

VIPOutlet also sells the unlocked 2024 Motorola Stylus version 8 GB with 256 GB storage for the same price. It sells out quickly.

Pretty sure they were referring to SIM Unlock and not bootloader, but I could be wrong.

That too. SIM unlocks, as in network unlocks are unattainable as well. Ask me how I know 🤦🏾 ♂️...

the 2025 made some real improvements over the 2024. The 2026 went with a smaller 6.3 screen and a better camera.

Yesterday, I was able to successfully get this phone rebranded to Tracfone while utilizing the existing Straight Talk physical SIM. However, the key to making this work is that the phone must be brand new OOB and not have been activated on ST's network.
