This free year of Google AI Pro is aimed at college students and stands out for Gemini Pro, NotebookLM, and the extra Google storage. The strongest appeal is the upgraded coding help, with small apps and personal projects getting much better results than before. Access runs through SheerID, so the signup asks for name, school, email, and document proof, and the entered school details cannot be changed after submission. Google Fi Wireless managed plans are not eligible yet, making verification the main hurdle.

Common Questions (5)

  • No. The claim flow now uses SheerID verification, and a .edu email by itself is not enough; you may also need to submit supporting documents such as a student ID or tuition bill.

  • No. Once you submit your name and school, the form reportedly locks those fields, so any mistake in the initial submission can prevent you from correcting it later.

  • After entering your name, school, and email, SheerID prompts for proof such as a tuition bill or a student ID with an expiration date. The verification is based on the information you enter plus uploaded documentation.

  • Yes. The free year can be useful for NotebookLM research and for building small personal apps, and Gemini Pro is described as strong enough to get code right on the first try for simple projects.

  • No, not yet. The offer message says it is not available for a Google One plan managed by Google Fi Wireless.

Can you explain how you set it up? I am in higher ed.
The questions are set up so that only answers given in lecture are correct. AI goes for the most statistically probable answer which means the most widely cited piece of information. This will be the wrong answer for my particular question. =)

Failing students because of your personal opinion on AI is both petty and lame. There are many ways a student can use AI that doesn't automatically mean the AI did the actual work for them. You might as well fail students for using wikipedia or even the internet at all. If they didn't go to a physical library and read the actual books, they fail.

Also, what do you people actually think will happen? That your personal disdain for AI, or punishing anyone who uses it, is going to make it go away? Because that's certainly something that has historically happened with new technology. /eyeroll
They fail themselves. And if individual choices made by individual citizens didn't matter, big tech goose-steppers wouldn't be spending hundreds of billions trying to get us to use their shit.

I have to say...I get a kick out of my students coming back perplexed as to how they failed my class, not realizing that I set things up in a certain way so that anyone who used AI has no chance of passing. =)
Pretty messed up that you get satisfaction from people's failure.

Agree. Remember when the iPad first came out? Everyone thought it was a dumb idea. Look at it now....

Now they don't want so many people to use it?

I think the satisfaction is more knowing that people who did the work got what they deserved. If cheaters get passed then the degree means nothing.

That is correct. I have the .edu email, but not that's not enough for Sheer ID. I hope someone can post a workaround.
ask AI for the bypass! lol

last year they let you use an edu email and not even a real one, a gibberish temp one. they didnt even bother coding in exceptions. now gemini is good enough to pay for and compute is expensive so they dont want to give it away anymore. they only want to target actual young people. for like 9 months out of the 12 they gave me i didnt even use gemini. so it wasnt like they were losing money on it. it was absolutely shit 1 year ago. the whole time i had gemini pro but i used chatgpt free. but now that it's finally good, it ran out for me and im actually paying for gemini now. the coding ability is really good. you can make small apps for personal use easily. like a year ago it could barely code a calculator without constant bug fixing prompts but now it can actually get it right on first try. i made a few apps that i wanted for years but nobody made them.

Sure, and for the online class you could always just have your smart friend take it for you. There's no stopping 100% of cheaters. I judge by the results: the class went from the average grade being roughly 90% before I implemented the changes to the average grade being roughly 70% after.

Exactly. This is why I don't give grade bumps just because a kid asked for it. What about the diligent kid who followed the rules, worked his or her ass off, got the grade they earned, and then accepted that? Why should the kid who just happens to be enough of a dickhead to grovel for grades get it, while the honest kid gets screwed?

Cheating doesn't really hurt me. It hurts the honest kids.

I think they did this last year, but you could verify with edu email. Now it's going through sheer ID.
