Most "compression" packing cubes have two sets of zippers. One to open/close cube to put/pull clothes in/out. A 2nd that zips around the cube 1.5 times to take some of the air out (similar to just pushing down on your clothes).
On using cubes, one's mileage may vary with them. They aren't really to save space but to better organize for long trips. The slight compression just mostly is used to get back the space you lose by using the cubes.
I use them (and honestly love them) for when I'm on long trips and I'm jumping from place to place during the trip (multi cities/hotels) so living out of my suitcase. As the linked video below references. You have drawers at home which separate your clothes items. These act like drawers for your trip.
